I found this guide invaluable when planning my latest Africa trip. Has a good balance of overview and comprehensiveness so not too heavy. Usually I get Lonely Planet but this is the best around at the moment.

I've been using Lonely Planet for all my previous trips and they've been alright aside from few occasions when they screwed me over with their outdated or completely wrong information. Don't look for much information in them anyways as long as they get me to bus stations and cheap hotels. More importantly, every one of my LP lasted without single page missing after months of being thrown around and getting soaked with water, beer, and whatelse. When few pages start falling off the book few hours after purchase it is a bad quality book. Especially when it is a travel guide! And that's what happened to this book even before the journey started, and for that this book fails as a travel guide!
The information in this Rough Guide seems to be ... Read More:

It would seem almost impossible to write a one-volume travel book on the USA but somehow Rough Guides has managed it in style.
I would usually hesitate to spend more than £15 on a paperback but this is so detailed and well-written I find myself returning to it again and again.
These days it's probably easier to use online resources when choosing accommodation but as a pithy guide to resorts and for planning trip itineries, this Rough Guide is invaluable.

Whenever I am going on holiday, one of the most exciting things for me is buying the rough guide before we go. On the rare occasion that I haven't done this i've felt I've gone into things blind and not taken the best choices in terms of trips etc.
This rough guide did prove invaluable on our trip to Sharm el Sheik and a day trip to Cairo, however the one thing I would question, and I find this is generally the case with Rough Guides, is that the prices quoted for meals and, in this case especially, taxis is often way out. We travelled only a month after this book was published, so I would expect it to be much more up to date than it was.
The info on Sharm was pretty basic for our needs (it focuses a lot on diving, which ... Read More:

This book is a musthave for any parents anxious about travelling abroad. No stone is left unturned, from plane to train travel it's all in there. There are also some hilarious stories from the experience of other parents which alone make the book a great read, let alone all the advice in there. Really it's a must for any one planning to travel anywhere with a baby/small children.

Despite being the most recent edition (August 2007) the book remains seriously out of date. A good example is a train in Trinidad that hasn`t been working for four years being descriped as in action.
In addition to the inaccuracy there is a general lack of detail about how to get places without using a taxi. For example, how far the coach station is out of town, or even exactly where it is. If your`re on a budget this book really isn`t for you. That said if you are going to one of the big resorts and want to do a few excursions I`m sure this`ll be fine.

OK, I love Rough Guides and always have done. But even allowing for this obvious bias this really is a superb book.
All of the usual information is there; the best places to see & do; how to get around by public & private transport; maps of major towns/cities; a v useful guide to (delicious) Keralan food & drink; local customs etc. You would expect this from a guide book, of course, but Rough Guides does this better than anyone else, and 'Kerala' is no exception.
The excellent 'Contexts' section, which fills in the history of this unique, fascinating, beautiful Indian state; and the feature 'text boxes' of a particular aspect of Keralan culture allow for a good understanding of the state, essential when you've passed the ... Read More:
