I have quite a few translations but this is by far the best, its so simple to read and understand. Commentary is short and the flow is good. Simple summary at the beginning is really good. Would recommend this to anyone and everyone as the 1st translation that should be read.

Although Karen Armstrong claims to have produced a biography of the Bible she has instead produced a biography of herself. Armstrong is a pedlar of the ideas of Wilfred Cantwell Smith who argued that religion had changed from a matter of the relationship between the divine and mankind into ritual observances which have themselves changed according to time and place.
This reflects Armstrong's own background. Formerly a Catholic nun, for whom membership of a convent was traumatic, she had a breakdown after having her doctoral thesis on Tennyson turned down by an external examiner. In 1984, thanks to her open hostility to religion, she was commissioned to write and present a TV documentary on the Apostle Paul for Channel ... Read More:

I mentioned to a new boyfriend that one of the things i had on my 'things to do before i die' list was to try every position in the kama sutra - an idea he pounced on!!. After looking at afew books, i decided on this modern version that includes all of the positions in the kama sutra.
I marked afew pages, left it with him and he marked some more and voila, communication problems in the bedroom were solved!!. As a shy person this book really has been the simplest way for me to communicate what i'm looking for!. The pictures enable you to quickly visualise the positions, as apposed to reading complex instructions that don't always seem to make sense (i had visions of me holding the book and calling out 'left abit, lift leg' etc :)).

It is interesting that concerning possibly the most ancient book in the Bible, so few Christians understand it's wisdom. With the help of rabbical scholars, John Hartley has rediscovered the books meaning.
Dr. Hartley uncovers what few scholars see. The point of the book of Job is not found in the speeches of Job's friends. What the book is about is not primarily found in the beginning or ending narratives; specifically that Job loses all to calamity and gains more in blessings at the end. Nor is the dialogue between God and Satan in the narrative the main point of the book. The book is not primarily about the Job's speeches; where Job wishes he had not been born and says he will not curse God. The Book of Job is not primarily about ... Read More:

These are simple but effective retellings of biblical parables, pitched exactly at toddler/pre-school level and can be read as simple moral tales teaching children about respect, keeping their promises, being helpful to those less fortunate etc, even if you are not a Christian (just omit the last paragraph of each if you want to avoid the religious message).

I am told that the average time a devotee of Harry Potter took to read the last and final 605-page book was 3½ days. The Lord of the Rings trilogy takes up to a fortnight if you stop occasionally to sleep, eat or wash. So why do we gasp in admiration when someone says, "This year I'm going to read the whole of the bible cover to cover, complete"
Well one reason is the bible is a little longer, the plot is quite simple, but the understanding is much harder. So if your new years resolution was to read the bible in a year, then I might have a very good suggestion. Read "Cover to Cover Complete, by Selwyn Hughes and Trevor J. Partridge, (well Selwyn and Trevor didn't actually write it, it is in fact the inspired word of God). This book is a one year ... Read More:

I was looking for a Christmas story to read to my daughter so that she grows up understanding the true meaning of Christmas. After one wrong turn, I found this book and I've been delighted. It tells the story beautifully, with gorgeous detailed pictures, and covers the important elements of the story. Highly recommended.
