Too many gardening authors take time out to wax lyrical about seasons and the joys of blackbirds and dew on your runner canes. Their books end up as a decent afternoon's read, but difficult to use when you're trying to work out what's going wrong with your kohlrabi.
This book is different. Veg are listed alphabetically with clear sections on selecting varieties, planting, looking after, harvesting and cooking, with a troubleshooting guide covering disease, pests, storage and the like.
No nonsense, everything you need and easy to find.

This is excellent and I would very highly recommended it. Having three Border Collies (two of them rescues with various problems), life could be difficult at times, to say the least. Jan Fennell's approach has been virtually foolproof for us, and in the end we were the ones needing training! If you follow her instructions consistently (and forever), pretty much any unwanted behaviour can be sorted out. I also highly recommend Turid Rugaas' 'On talking terms with dogs - calming signals'; it's an invaluable aid and accompaniment to The Dog Listener.

this is a great book, so much useful information in there. in my opinion theres already enough good reviews to convince one to buy it, so theres not really much to add.
although its important to know, this doesn't tell you practical skills, 'how-to's like roofing, plumbing etc. its more about prices of materials verses labour, explains the ins and outs of employing an architect to design for you, explains how to deal with building regulations, that kind of thing.
VERY useful

The book has clearly been paistainkingly been put together and is very detailed. However, was disappointed to realise the book is probably better suited for those training to be yoga instructors as there is no techniques listed with each pose. Although says what uscles are woked and positions shown in various angles. Will be useful to me but will have to use alongside anither yoga aid either book or dvd to get real benftis of book. Bought it because I like to know what the different asanas are actually doing and for this its brilliant. Beware long sections at begining about breathing and the spine.

I had the choice between this book and the readers digest equivalent. The Book People were at work so all I got was a quick look through and decided on this one pretty much just down to the fact this book had little maps which provided an overveiw of each walk - I have to have maps wherever I go because I will get lost otherwise.
I got back to my desk, had a look at reviews on Amazon for both books and was pleased when the Readers Digest one didnt seem to do too great but this was then blown away because this book had NO reveiws.. and to be honest I don't know why.
When I got home I had a good look through and I was very pleased this was my choice.. it is so well thought out. I'm not particularly into walking but I do go camping now and ... Read More:

The chart is very clear and really detailed, brilliant value for the price. However, my one criticism is that there is so much info packed onto this poster that it is sometimes not 100% clear. Brilliant for learning the names of muscles but not so good if you need to see specific sites of attatchment etc. If they'd spread the info over 2, or even 4, posters I would happily have bought them all, and having subsequently seen how brilliant the Chartex posters are I am a little disappointed. If you're short of wall space this is a perfect solution but for more detail go for the Chartex posters.

As a med student..i found that this book covered basically anything i have needed to know in a simple..easy to understand fashion.
Everyone i have spoken to has a copy of this book..and uses it on at least a weekly basis. The book covers material from the very basics to the complex..and managed to acheive this without being patronising or condescending..all in all a great book

Just after reading a book on similar topics which I found disappointing (Proust and the Squid: The Story and Science of the Reading Brain), this was far better. Each chapter tackles a manageable issue, and most of them focus on a single individual who has overcome a brain-related problem, stiking a good balance between human interest and explanation of the underlying science. I was a bit surprised to see not a single picture in the whole book, but perhaps the simple truth (demonstrated quite dramatically in the other book!) is that printable pictures or diagrams of brains don't tell us that much.
A couple of minor gripes: there's a bit too much description of experiments as "brilliant" rather than saying why they're brilliant. And there's an irritating ... Read More:
