Nowadays many divers are producing dive guides to their favourite destinations. Some are really good and reflect the author's life-long knowledge of the area. Sadly, far too many are poorly written and should not have been published. Technical, reference books, however, are not for those who lack the requisite qualifications which must be coupled with expertise. Who knows what misinformation may be imparted - simply because the author did not posses a complete understanding of the subject.
This is another book from White Star Publishing of Italy. It is not, however, another diving guide. A quick glance at the contents reveals how this book seeks to explain the Coral Reef - from 500 million years ago to the present day, it's geography, ... Read More:

I was drawn to purchase this book as I really enjoyed reading McMurrays' account of the various efforts made to explore the Andrea Doria over the years. (Deep Descent - Adventure and death diving the Andrea Doris, available through Amazon) This book about the Empress of Ireland was more like the curate's egg, being good in parts, and much space is inevitably given to the disputes over access to the wreck, issues over the legality of retrieving artefacts from the wreck and attempts to set up a museum about the wreck (eventually successful) with an underlying Quebecois versus Anglophone versus the Yanks conflict present! However, I cannot see how the author could have got round this overload of information as the various long drawn out disputes profoundly ... Read More:

This is a nice little book and good value for its price, however the photos are not the most stunning dive photos that I have seen. There are a mixture of quotes from various authors and sayings, and photos throughout the book and a section at the back stating where the photos were taken. It is more a book you might keep on your desk at work for a quick escape/break from what you are doing rather than one that you keep at home to inspire you to go off diving again.

A top-notch, very clearly written and exceptionally well illustrated field guide to most of the tropical and temperate shark species known to science today. Basically aimed at the non-specialist reader, this guide features nonetheless scientifically correct texts and excellent color photos (all of live, free specimens taken in the wild - which is quite a feat!), offering reliable information, excellent value for money and hours of viewing/reading pleasure. Advanced readers, divers, snorkellers and underwater photographers looking for more photo-packed, exhaustive guides to coral reef marine life worldwide should also consider the latest offerings by this well respected author/photographer husband-and-wife team, such as the spectacularly illustrated A Diver's Guide ... This is another book from parent publishers White Star Publishing of Italy. 27 dive-sites are covered which include 3 from Israel, 16 from Egypt, 5 From Sudan and 3 from Eritrea. Each section commences with an introduction and each specific dive site contains maps, an artistic impression of the entire site and a written description. Whilst the book is well supported with good photographs throughout, the artwork is not up to any acceptable standard with some of the pictures looking as though they might have been drawn by schoolchildren. Most are far from accurate, the maps even more so.
The very first page shows the "Contents" on the left-hand side revealing those 27 numbered dive sites. Opposite this is a full page map showing the approximate location ... Read More:
