I have come to expect great things form Harry's, the place were such classics as the Bloody Mary, the White Lady, the Side Car originated. Unfortunately, the book is slightly disappointing. The packaging is not great -although practical with its thumb index- and the 370 recipes will be of little or no use to the modern bartender. Furthermore, most recipes have a questionable Harry's twist (lemon juice in a Margarita, lemon peel in an Old Fashioned?!?). However this small volume refreshingly dispense of the obligatory "how to set up your home bar" section, and does not bother with cheesy and frivolous pictures...the recipes and no frills. The world of wine in particular can be so full of hidden agendas (snobbism, exclusivity, duplicity, spin...) that it is a real treat to find a guidebook that cuts straight through all that. What an accessible, entertaining and actually useful book. Last year, I was wandering in Oban and looking for a whisky book ro read while travelling through the scottish Islands. At £10, this book looked like a bargain and the photographs were of excellent quality and turned out to be an excellent introductory book on Whisky. I have read already a few similar books and this one covers all the process on whisky production and whiskies, with a very pleasant layout and structure. If you are looking for an introductory book on whisky, I can only highly recommend it. Price value is excellent. >>More Details |
