This book first arrived in a blizzard of publicity back in 2005. Now 4 years on, it has been re-released in a revised and expanded edition with an extra 90 pages of bonus material (be sure to order the 336-page edition) consisting of newspaper columns and blog entries, along with a few corrections and an overall restructuring (the previous introductory magazine excerpts to each chapter have now been consolidated into a single article and moved to the back of the book).
I found Freakonomics to be an engaging and entertaining read, albeit a fairly light one. It doesn't set out to teach or champion any particular theory or methodology; it simply takes a handful of diverse real life scenarios - parenting, the Ku Klux Klan, crack dealers, ... Read More:

This book is wonderful, imaginative, easy to read and understand. I also found it entertaining, for a 'non cook' that is praise indeed! Although I am no great cook, I do keep chickens for eggs, the wife wont let me eat them, (yet!)I do grow lots of stuff, and much of this is credited to the Author. A man who cherishes his food and where it comes from, and how. This book comes close to being my Bible

In the final installment of Princess Dairies, Princess Mia Thermopolis goes through some pretty intense and stressful times that all students go through- choosing a college to go to after graduating from high school. But Mia has got more on her plate than she can deal with; she's stressed about her father's political campaign. She's worried about her repeatedly rejected novel that she has written for her final senior project, the extravagant party Grandmere is throwing her for her upcoming eighteenth birthday, and oh, the fact that Michael Moscovitz has come back from Japan, and she suddenly misses sniffing his neck when she already has a boyfriend whom she actually cares about. How will Mia solve her entangled issues in this gripping finale, and ... Read More:

My kids - aged 2 and 4 - love the original Gruffalo story and ask to read it almost every bedtime. There was initial excitement when I brought this one home. But after a couple of readings they quickly stopped asking for it. If I suggest reading it now, they say "no, we want the first Gruffalo story".
In truth, the original Gruffalo story is so good that it's a very, very tough act to follow. But, even allowing for that, this sequel almost entirely lacks most of the features that make the first story so memorable. It hasn't got anything like the same rhythm in the writing. And the plot meanders its way to a weak pay-off that has little impact and doesn't make much sense.
I received this book just before January and have read it cover to cover already, as I've not put it down. Bryan Peterson writes this so clearly to understand and you really do get a few moments of "Wow that really makes sense". And since reading it, I look even more forward to going out and taking more creative exposures.

I have upgraded from Elements 4 to Elements 7 so wanted a manual to understand what was new / different. Unfortunately Scott Kelby's book wasn't available in time for Christmas so I bought this instead. It is a fairly weighty tome and seems to cover most subjects well. The main shortcoming for me is the quality of the picture printing. On a number of pictures it is difficult to see the detail, or the difference between the "before" & "after" shots, which for a photo editing manual is a major drawback.
If you want a decent manual on Elements 7 this is fine, but if like me you want to see in print what to expect on screen I would consider other options as well.

I bought Britain From Above as a present and what a success! The whole family were enthralled. Amazing and unique photography alongside interesting commentary make this book a real showpiece and a good addition to any coffee table. I think I might have to buy a copy for myself!
