I wanted to cry after reading this, which is unusual for me. Maria Augusta's Trapp's honesty as she shares her struggles of adjusting to new social groups is amazing. This book offers insights into what culture shock is truly like; so it would be great for the social sciences, especially multicultural educatiion.

If you read the dramatic newspaper headlines in 1995 about the sudden, unexpected disappearance of Stephen Fry from "Cell Mates" and wondered what the alternative, behind the scenes story really was, then read on. The play that had just started it's London run, following a successful run in the provinces (if Guildford is still a provincial theatre), was playing to packed houses; audiences wanting to see Stephen Fry and Rik Mayall as the lead characters in the play, as much as they wanted to see the play itself. A decent play which had been successful in Guildford, but killed off by audience disappointment at not seeing their beloved Fry. Simon Gray spares no punches in his account, at times acerbic, but usually amusing and at the end understanding ... Read More:

I read this after loving 'Fatty Batter'. Michael Simkins has an extraordinary gift for comic writing. It doesn't matter if you haven't the slightest interest in acting (or cricket), this book is hilarious. Perfect holiday reading and guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. Thank you Mr Simkins - you deserve a standing ovation.

I had a great deal of trouble starting this book, the colloquial tone didn't chime well for me (a personal thing, I know), and, as other reviewers have noted Miles Davis was not a nice chap. Despite his background - more privileged than most Black people at the time, something that he references quite a lot during the book - Miles comes across as an aggressive misogynist, who when rescued from addiction by his Father goes back to drugs pretty quickly. Is he racist? Maybe, but given the context of the time in American history that he writes about is his attitude to White people surprising? In all this, it's the misogyny I struggle with & was hoping all the way through for a bit of insight & regret in his reflection of his relationships with ... Read More:

Books : Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain

Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain

by: Charles Cross
June 20, 2002
Best Selling > Books > Theatre and Performance Art

This book is so gripping. As a new Kurt Cobain fan, I found it so interesting. From a psychology point of view, you really learn to sympathize with Kurt, learning about his long-term problems in his life, which escalated to his drug addiction.

Excellent buy for anyone interested in Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.

This book features so many people in Kurt's life, you really start to learn what Kurt must have really been like.

Hutch

Leslie Hutchinson was the first important singer-pianist - he virtually gave birth to the notion of "society" entertainer, although he was no dilletante: Hutch's was a masterful musician, one of the first great interpreters of the best songs of the 20s 30s and 40s. Today his renditions of Porter, Gershwin and the ilk may seem a little fruity, but Hutch's fine musicianship leaps through the decades.

Charlottle Breese's biography couldn't be more welcome or better written. She chronicles not only Hutch's adventurous life, but also the whole "smart set" of 1930s London in all their glory and excess. Hutch's story is a compelling and sometimes scandalous one, as Breese documents his career from his glory days in the 1930s to his rather sad decline after the ... Read More:

I first saw Shane MacGowan on `The Old Grey Whistle Test' promoting the `Pogetry in Motion' e.p. with The Pogues. I think the set included `The Body of an American', `A Rainy Night in Soho', `A Pair of Brown Eyes' and `Streams of Whiskey'. I was hooked, the next day I bought the e.p. and before the end of the month I'd got both their l.p.'s `Red Roses for Me' and `Rum Sodomy and the Lash'. That Autumn I was to attend by first concert, The Pogues played Leeds Uni, and I was a fifteen year old novice having a furtive pint of Guinness and hiding behind my enamel Pogues Shamrock badge.

After that following The Pogues was a great adventure, the single with The Dubliners, the contribution to the `Sid and Nancy' soundtrack, the appearance in the film `Straight to Hell' (or `Straight ... Read More:

I'm pregnant with my second child, and read the great reviews here. I wanted something that sympathised and revelled in the ghastliness of pregnancy. But you don't get any of that here - a couple of fat jokes, but most of it is the author's presentation of her wacky friends and NCT acquaintances - who are not very funny caricatures. I have to say, even mumsnet threads are quite a bit wittier and quite a lot funnier.

Books : Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills

Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills

by: Charles Henderson
September 30, 1991
Best Selling > Books > Theatre and Performance Art

I had often heard of the sniper lore tales of Gunny Sergeant Hathcock during the vietnam war but to read about his exploits was a revelation. Here is the story of a rare individual who managed to combine the latent talent of a top match sharpshooter with that of a skilled woodsman...the result is a historical overview of one of the most famed snipers of all time. The book is well written and outlines Hathcock's shooting career and then his subsequent deployment to Vietnam where he carries out the most audacious sniper missions to become not only a legendary sniper but a legendary marine. Hatchock eventually has to overcome horrific injuries sustained in an enemy ambush during his second Vietnam tour and it is only these injuries that terminates his sniper 'killing' career. Whether you like the thought ... Read More:
