I have to admit I didn't immediately feel convinced by this reading, as the author of the first review clearly did.
But after a while, my god it grew on me. Timson is extraordinarily good at getting Dickens' way of writing to work, read out loud. I really felt like I was getting some insight into what it must have been like at the time, hearing Dickens himself read out his new novel.
Timson has a great ear for the different characters, and you immediately fall in love with the Boffins in particular. And he makes the opening scene with the tides of the Thames seem deeply sinister.
£38 might seem like a lot for a book but it is about seven weeks of solid entertainment if you drive half an hour a day... ... Read More:

A different type of Dick Francis story with racing only appearing to be in the background. However as the saga progresses racing, horses and all things connected with them become very important. At first the dialogue seems to plod, with just the statutory nasty events to keep one interested, towards the second half of the book things hot up in good style keeping my nose glued to the pages until it reached an excellent dramatic ending. As usual the hero starts the book single and living alone, thus giving good scope for some romantic interest. Very enjoyable, I remain a firm Dick Frances fan.

Such a delicious fairytale. One of those books that leaves you with a big sense of loss when you've finished it and drives you to a bookshop in search of titles by the same author (unfortunately there aren't any others). Vivid, funny and utterly unputdownable. Immerse yourself - it's like having a long bubble bath with a chilled bottle of champagne by your side.

I suppose this book could be made into a one-hour TV special but it's not an absorbing read at all. I am surprised Connelly has tarnished Harry B's image in this way. All is not lost but he's going to have to come up with a classic next time. And try and make the baddie NOT a serving policeman or FBI agent for a change please Mike!

I really enjoyed this far more then I thought it would. Its lovely to step back into the world of Austen and see what love can be like at its most innocent. Beautifully written with comedy throughout, a must for all romance fans! I only wish I had read this sooner

I read the first two books to this series a fair while ago, so when i recieved this as a christmas present, i was a bit dubious as to whether i would enjoy it, mostly due to the fact that i had a bit of trouble actually remembering the story. Despite this, however, when i started reading, it was so easy to get drawn into the plot, both tumultuous and thrilling as it was.
I found myself liking Mircea a lot more than i had in the previous two books and i liked how he was involved with Cassie, but I am also a Pritkin fan :) I just think there is so much chemistry between him and Cassie and as both characters are very headstrong, i think that that chemistry present should just naturally progress, something i think that would be a little bit fun for us as the readers. ... This is sheer heaven listening to Anton Leson reading Great Expectations.
In the past I have tended to buy abridged versions of audio books. For my husbands bithday I bought the unabridged audio cd Great expectations and he raved that this was the best bithday present he had ever received!!
Having listened to it myself I am now addicted to unabridged Charles Dickens cds.

It's very tempting to rate this as the quintessential "cosy English murder mystery" but such pigeonholing would be lazy and far from accurate. This, arguably the best of the novel-length Miss Marple stories, has a surprisingly dark and at times brutal quality. The narrative is complex enough to draw you in without losing you in a blizzard of barely glimpsed supporting characters/necessary red herrings (an occasional Christie failing). The recording itself is faultless; it's not just that Joan Hickson was and will be for all time the perfect embodiment of the central character, it's her ability to convey so many different shades of mood and emotion in a single passage. Incidents deftly sketched on the page take on a full and entrancing range of colour and tone here. A great Christie ... Read More:
