I bought this book for my Mom who had just been on a one day course in Bristol on how to live with cancer and how food can help. Both my Mom and Dad found the course very useful, so I thought I'd buy them a book that would hopefully back up what they had learnt.
This book is fantastic - so my Mom says, it backs everything up that she learnt on her course, and is written in a precise and clear way, that she can understand. The recipes are most useful. One of the authors was actually the tutor on the course, and the other was the oncologist.
This book is a must if you are living with cancer and have just found out (like my Mom did) that she is not to have any dairy products in her diet.
I was given this book many years ago and gradually I have used its recipes more and more. The presentation is a breakdown into twelve months with recipes using what is in season during that month - or should be in season if so much produce was not flown in from Africa and further afield. Given the move toward eating produce that does not have "air miles", this book deserves more attention than it received - maybe it was a little ahead of its time. The one drawback is that most of the recipes require some preplanning and effort and are more suited to a weekend than during the week when you may have rushed home from work. That's the reason why I gave 4 stars rather than 5, but its a useful prompt to more seasonally based cooking.

On the outset, this is a well-written, well-presented book, lots of photos, lots of tips and info, especially with regard to nutrition. However, before purchasing this book, I had no idea this author was Californian, and the fact is, this has a great bearing on the recipes themselves. Many of the ingredients are either just not available in Britain, or only available in the major cities, or are so expensive that it makes the meal only fit for special occasions. Also, many ingredients have travelled from far corners of the globe, thus contributing towards a heavier carbon footprint than I would like. So, for those who wish to tread lightly upon this world, I would recommend this book only to those living in warmer climes, where the produce is locally ... Read More:

I just bought this book and I must say,I don't really see the point of it. First of all,if you own any vegan cookbooks at all,you probably have all of the recipes already. Second, its set up is very messy and difficult to read because of the sloppy zine style, which isn't good when trying to cook or even decide on a recipe. Third, the names of some the recipes make it rather difficult to figure out what you're looking at and the rest of the names just seem unnecessary(i.e. Leeks with a drinking problem;Ellie the Judas Priestess' Drunken Beans.I just like titles that tell me what I'm looking at so I can quickly decide on a meal).I'm not a prude or easily offended, but some of the drawings of guns being fired,a bear eating what appears to be a human and the page ... I love this book - every recipe I have made has worked. Having repeatedly borrowed it from the library I tried to buy a copy without success - until now, with this lovely new paperback edition. She seems to have come up with many ideas that I have not seen elsewhere - very refreshing. Also, many recipes are for two people which avoids having to scale everything down - although she must have a bigger appetite than I have! There are no pictures of the food; instead there are vibrant fruit and vegetable ink paintings. I wouldn't have minded fewer of these but it's a small quible and better than nothing at all. It is one of the few books that I actually cook from out of my embarassingly large collection of vegetarian cookery books.

This is a great diet and a great book.
I've been on it for 5 weeks and have lost a stone.
Follow the recipes and don't cheat and so will you.

We have been using this book for about 7 months now, and find the information very helpful in how to feed our new arrival. How to introduce different types of food and when have made life so much easier for my wife and I. The recipes are very easy to follow and we would recommend this book to anyone who has just had a baby.
I really like this book and do find it inspirational. However, many many of the recipes just can't be made. They take too long, the ingredients are difficult to find or prohibitively expensive.
I still think this book is worth buying though for the remaining recipes that can be made. The cool smoothies, salads, juices and some of the cookies and sweets.

I bought this book to help out a friend whose husband suddenly turned vegetarian. I looked all over the bookshops to find something interesting and only came across the usual photographic delights - very pretty, but neither here nor there for the serious cook. I liked this book so much I decided to keep it and buy a second copy for my friend.
This book has, as it says, 1000 recipes, many of them new to me. I loved the no-nonsense style, the way the recipes are displayed, the general tone. If you're a real cook you'll love this book, whether you're a vegetarian or not.
