If Little Men weren't an entertaining novel, it could serve as a timeless reminder of how adults can help children direct their energies in helpful ways and develop better habits. The philosophy is to provide lots of love, understanding, forgiveness, slack and carefully chosen incentives and guidance while encouraging friendships among youngsters who will balance one another out if they spend time together. You'll recognize lots of Marmee's loving approach in Jo's more rough and tumble perspective. It's a nice combination.
For those who loved the child-centered world of Little Women, you'll be entranced by what Jo does to educate and raise her own boys, her nephew and niece, a troublesome neighbor girl, male boarders and some unfortunate ... Read More:

I approached this thinking i was about to read a love story - "the greatest love story of all" - as i was led to believe but finished the book having the completely opposite attitude i thought i would have. Wuthering Heights is more about the consequences of selfishness, arrogance and revenge rather than pure love. Its a dark read. Its interesting how Bronte managed to make a timeless story based around the lives and legacies of two characters who seem so unloveable. I disliked both Catherine and Heathcliffe but found myself constantly turning the pages to find out what happened next.

This collection of Jane Austens letters is a must for all fans who would like a peek inside the mind of the author. It is the most extensive collection to date and Le Faye has done quite a lot to make it as accessible as possible. It features all of the surviving letters from Jane Austen to her sister Cassandra plus some letters to some of her brothers, a niece, etc. It also includes three letters from Cassandra to various relatives from the time immediately after Jane Austens death and so also shows Jane Austen from another persons perspective. The only drawback of this book is that all the notes are in the back, arranged by the number of each letter, and so you find yourself flipping back and forth quite a lot but it is an annoyance well worth putting up with. ... As I only live 20 miles from York where most of these books are set, I can perhaps visualise better than most the area of England the books take place in. Many of the streets of York mentioned in the books are still there and of the course so is the Minster.
Owen Archer the lead character in the book is a Welsh longbow man who works for a high church dignitary and spends some of his spare time helping in his wife's apothecary shop. He is called upon by William of Wykeham, the Bishop of Winchester, to help him with a serious problem. I myself am interested in this period of English history and the author's authenticity cannot be questioned and her excellent story telling is spellbinding. I cannot recommend her books highly enough and I am always ... Read More:

i have read this a couple of times now and it's beautiful. Combines the nasty realities of life with touching sentiment and beautifully crafted characters. Story follows a familiar theme with the lovely kind poor girl and rich cad....i don't want to spoil it...but it follows her through, the christian motif through it v strong and poignant with a heart breaking ending. Excellent

This is a review of the item and not the novel. This edition is, in my view, horrible. The print is too small and the hideousness of the cloth-bound cover defies description. Does someone really get paid for this kind of design work ? All I wanted was a quality hard-back with reasonable sized font that I could really enjoy reading. This isn't it. I am returning it.

This is the first book I have read by Clare Chambers, and I loved it. I felt charmed by her refreshing humour and well crafted use of language, especially her descriptions of Gerald, which had me laughing out loud. The way this author writes keeps the pages turning as the dramatic mingles seamlessly with the comic into a totally entertaining story.
I have a slight criticism about the ending, hence only four stars. I was expecting a twist, and had considered the possibility of the one presented, but for me the reasoning behind the outcome is only just believable. It could have been more convincing.
Nevertheless I am looking forward to reading more of Ms Chambers work, as writers with her talent and flair can brighten the dullest of days.
