The Good Soldier Svejk: and His Fortunes in the World War is my favourite book because it's central character is outwardly an imbecile but inwardly highly sophisticated. This literary vehicle is expertly used to illustrate the absurdity of the final years of the Austro-Hungarian empire through the medium of fine humour. The Good Soldier Svejk was the inspiration for many great 20th Century satirical novels, but for my money it is the funniest and best.

It's difficult to find good Spanish authors suitable for beginners. The idea behind this book is good. Short stories with the Spanish text translated on the opposite page. This makes it easy to progress through the story without losing too much momentum. The translations are quite good.
I found the stories a bit boring. It appears that in an effort to find reputable authors of good literature, the editors sacrificed more potentially interesting stories with actual events. The stories are often long-winded and slow with no great drama. They didn't maintain my interest beyond an exercise in grammar and vocabulary building. But if stories about Literary Tea Parties and a woman's indifference to other people get you hooked then this is for you. Personally I ... Read More:

In the Name of the Rose, is in many ways a frustrating book to read, because the reader required as much perseverance as the monk-turned-detective protagonist, William. It is a very top heavy book, complete with Latin phraseology, which in spite of Umberto Eco's obvious gift for narrative, is testing to navigate; many will begin and not finish. However, if you are a curious sort, and love to unravel a good mystery, you will no doubt continue - seven deaths is no mean body count for a secluded monastery - and finally reap the rewards of crossing the halfway point. The unravelling of the plot is brilliant - it questions stereotypes, tests faith, interrogates purity and most of all entertains. The labyrinth at the centre of the monastery is in many ways a metaphor for how the ... Read More:

For as long as I can remember I have resisted reading Lolita. But because it is so often referred to as a "classic" I felt in the end I should put aside my prejudices and tackle it.

In many ways it is as I expected it to be. It is not a comfortable read and the unreliable narrator continually beguiles and tricks us. Humbert claims to love Lolita deeply but at the same time reveals the damage he is doing to her. The narrative is made even more intriguing by its attitude to Lolita - neither "innocent" nor "pure". Nabokov's language is superb - he revels in word play and the book is filled with literary allusions. The road trip across America is brilliantly seen through an outsider's critical eye.

I can see how Lolita has enthralled and irritated so many ... Read More:

Books : The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Dover Thrift)

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (Dover Thrift)

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an incredible poem. Haunting and thrilling, it captivated the reader with its superlative descriptive writing. Coleridge describes the endless sea from the vastness of icy Antartica to the smooth tropical seas. The mariner has visions of sea monsters and Death, who plays a dice game in which Death wins the lives of his ship's crew. The mariner recounts a nightmare voyage to the South Pole from which he alone survives to tell the tale.

William Blake is one of the most influencial poets in history, and would make my list of top five poets ever any day of the week. 'Songs of Innocence and Experience' is his most famous and highly regarded set of poems, and rightly so too. 'Innocence and Experience' is unique in so far as there are a lot of poems with duplicate titles, but both poems will be from a completely different viewpoint, a different time in life; the poems from 'Innocence' will often reflect happiness and optimism etc, whereas the counterpart 'Expreience' poem will refelct completely the opposite, this allows Blake of course to make rather poignant comments on the corruption of innocence, as well as a lot of rather biting observations on 17th century society and in particular on the concept of organised religion, as ... This book is hard to review without giving too much away. This is one of the few not set at a famous battle, however wonderful setting and great plot. With the return of 2 of Sharpe's biggest enemies Hakeswill and Ducos, our Sharpie has his hand's full. Once again Cornwell gives us another page turner!

Having read this, it makes me regret either giving almost any other book a five-star rating or the fact that it's not possible to give six stars in special circumstances. And these are special circumstances. All those books that have the five stars, they deserve them: they're great reads. But this, this is just exceptional. A masterpiece.

Yesterday, I wasn't reading a book. I was spending time in the company of a great person or great people. The style is so personal and intimate. Not only in the sense that another's soul is being laid bare but also in the sense of your own life stories being revealed to you. Very, very moving and very, very thought-provoking.

If you are at all interested in the condition of being human, human identity or you just enjoy meeting great characters ... Read More:

This book is too much fun. The success of the book (it is, of course a tremendously successful piece of writing)depends on the central character, Holly Golightly who charms not only the characters in the book but the reader as well. All of the action occurs in New York City, and the setting just enhances the plot (hence the title). The theme centers around parties, relationships and romance in a frivolous, somewhat flighty atmosphere. Capote's capacity for dialogue borders on genius. I suspect his near perfect recall for conversation helped create this character.
