De Waal argues convincingly, scientifically and objectively yet without the straitjacketed approach of many scientists, for the existence of ethical behaviour in non-human animals. Beautifully written, this book should be read by every student of animal behaviour.

Don't be fooled by the little cub on the front of the book with his sweet little smile, this is a very harsh book. It had me in tears most of the way through, and just when i couldnt take it any more, gave me some good news. in this way, it shows how much has and how much still needs to be done. Its enough to turn the hardest fur and leather wearing, pig-eating, animal testing sadist into a gentle hearted animal lover. I wouldnt recommend it for younger teenagers, but this is one fantastic book.
