Richard Heinberg's book, The Party's Over - Oil, War and the Fate of Industrial Societies, is an overview of Peak Oil issues; the situation where easily recoverable and inexpensive oil reaches a maximum level of global output but demand continues to rise, leaving a net energy loss for its consumers.
The book is divided into six logical chapters (and a 2005 updated Afterword), beginning with (1) what is energy and how have civilisations harnessed it over the centuries, moving through to (2) the industrial interval and what impact oil has played on the domestic and geopolitical scene, then looking at (3) how Peak Oil is actually ascertained. Chapter 4 gives a review of the potential of non-petroleum energy sources (coal, nuclear, ... Read More:

This book is such a valuable contribution to an at-home or school bookshelf that I am amazed it doesn't already have a page of great reviews already. It's bright and lively to look at, following a little boy and his Grandpa, and at the same time it introduces clearly and cleverly the ideas of recycling etc. to small children and explaining why it is important.
George is a typical little boy dressed in cape and pants playing at saving the world in a superhero-esque way. But Grandpa is older and wiser and explains a different way to save the planet - and the ways that a small child really can change the world which involves not just recycling and repairing, but eating a locally-produced strawberry tart and hidden treasures in the local charity ... As all the other reviewers have said - this book is vitally important for the planet. But it is also an interesting look at the deeper meaning of life and what this means to each person through his or her own life.
I really do recommend it and hope that more and more people read it.

I am relatively new to literature regarding the environment and matters of sustainability, so only have a limited perspective on the topic, but I have to say this book is the most influential piece of work I have ever read. Tim Flannery does an amazing job of educating the reader (which includes non-scientific folk like myself) on the current state of the environment, how it managed to get to the state in which it's in and where it's heading.
If I was asked which book, out of everything I have ever read, would I recommend everyone read it would be "The Weather Makers". I know how cliche that sounds but if everyone did read this book and used the knowledge acquired in their everyday life then the world would be a far better place for us all. ... Read More:

Have you ever wondered about the chemistry behind everyday materials like salt, fuels, caffeine or medicine? This book takes a bunch of molecules familiar to most people, either from their everyday life or from news headlines and explores them from a chemist's point of view.
The result is an intriguing book, written in an enthusiastic and friendly style. It doesn't take much understanding of chemistry to follow Emsley and he offers interesting perspectives to everyday materials. Molecules at an Exhibition is a good and entertaining way to increase one's knowledge on chemistry. (Review based on the Finnish translation.)
