Have you ever wondered why we have such inconsistent attitudes towards animals? For example, why we keep some species in poor conditions and then eat them while pampering others and treating them as members of our family? This is a thoroughly enjoyable read both for the layperson and those interested in research into the relationship between humans and other species. Serpell writes incredibly well; concepts are presented clearly and clarified with very very interesting examples. This really is a great book!

Bill Houston and Robin Griffiths combine original thought with a comprehensive understanding of cycles. This makes their book on water essential reading for anyone interested in the political , environmental and economic challenges the world faces in the next century.

The risks we potentially face from water shortages are frightening. This book discusses population movements and the possibility of military action to safeguard water supplies. It also clarifies for investors which countries are best positioned to face these challenges.

I found this book so gripping I read it in one sitting, Although no forecast is 100% accurate it is fascinating to consider the possibilities.

A really clear political exposition, which helps provide solid philosophical underpinnings to veganism and a way forward for animal rights' thinking which does not include a lot of "they're-just-like-us-no-they're-not" irrelevancies. Very readable, too! Highly recommended.

My siblings gave me a copy of Dreamland for my birthday when I was in Iceland in 2006. As an environmental scientist who has lived abroad for almost 30 years I was fascinated that - finally - Andri Snaer was waking up the icelandic nation to what has been going on with regard to the relationship between "cheap" energy and the selling off of the unique nature of the island. In my own work related to environment and sustainability I have come to understand that awareness raising and truth telling is at the heart of leading change. Dreamland indeed soon became an all-time best seller in Iceland selling over 20,000 copies. For a nation of 300,000 this equates to selling 4 million copies in the UK.

Dreamland looks at ideas, what ... Read More:

We Are the Weather Makers: The Story of Global Warming

This is an interesting little book which will keep you reading right to the end. Tim Flannery takes a global look at climate change issues and global warming and although he doesn't quite get it all right all the time (he says Iceland was the country allowed to exceed its 1990 CO2 levels by the greatest amount (10%) but he was unaware that Ireland was allowed to exceed 1990 levels by 13% (and despite these extremely favourable conditions, has managed to mess up and exceed quota by almost three times that amount - SHAME on my selfish and corrupt Government, FDI and countrymen and women!!) Fast paced, Flannery skips from issue to issue to issue. When will we, as a nation and as a ... Read More:
