I picked up this book last night intending to have a casual flick through it.I then proceeded to read it cover to cover unable to put it down.Monty and Sarah Dons genuine love of nature and propensity for producing wonderfully simple dishes from their own fruit and veg is truly inspirational. The underlying theme to this book is :You dont have to be a gardening genius or own countless acres of land to produce great fruit and veg, anyone can do it.As a society we have become divorced from the practical production of what we consume, through ignorance we justify genetic engineering, factory farming and all manner of insecticides, pesticides, etc.Dont get me wrong im not anti-supermarket but if everyone who could grow something did just that then we ... This is a splendid book and the enthusiasm of the author shines through. No book on cacti can give all the answers, the subject is too vast. The author of this book takes the sensible approach and ensures that the content is well written and informative. The photographs in the book are excellent and show some species that are not normally seen in this type of book, particularly the Asclepiadaceae family. The feeling that the author would like you the reader to know exactly what he knows comes through strongly. There are articles on pests and diseases, grafting, watering and soil mixtures and even some tips on showing your plants. For those people who have a small collection of plants and want to keep them healthy and flowering, ... Read More:

Every vegetable is available in a number of different varieties. But which varieties to choose? In the case of most veg, choosing is fairly simple and is fun; it usually takes a couple of evenings going through the seed catalogues when preparing next season's seed order. But potatoes are special. Knowing - really knowing - about the different varieties available, along with their strengths and weaknesses, is necessary, fascinating, fun, rewarding and strangely addictive. And of course this reseach really pays off come harvest time. The best way to learn about potatoes - the varieties available, their characteristics, the difference between 1st earlies, 2nd earlies, maincrop, the growing techniques, etc. - is to read this invaluable book. It ... Read More:

This book is part of a practical gardening series from Garden Organic. It is one of the latest books in this series, published in 2008. Growing vegetable without chemicals is the best way. This book shows hot to grow organically. With vegetables being sprayed with chemicals many times over, travelling miles to reach us, sitting in storage - it makes sense to grow your own.
Half of this 64-page booklet is taken up with where, how to and suggestions for organic gardening. The remainder looks at the vegetables themselves. The instructions are easy to follow and are illustrated with full-colour photographs. There is little here for experienced vegetable growers, but this is a useful book fro beginners.

I agree with 3britsabroad that this is an inspiring read for even an experienced food grower (except I went out a bought 4 vines!). In fact I think its a great book for any seasoned grower that needs to refocus or tighten up on quality. I will try very hard to plant up my new strawberry bed "a stride apart" and my new blueberry bushes have had a bog environment created for them. Yet again Bob is showing us we can do better with out costing the Earth.
This would also be as excellent gift for any aspiring food grower as Bob's experience will save them many years of frustration and poor croppping at the same time as inspiring them to have a go!
