If I could have only one fish cookery book, it would be this one. There are some superb recipes that really work. I feel immensely grateful to Rick Stein for inspiring me to cook many more exciting and unusual fish dishes.

I was a little disappointed in the contents of this book. Allotment history maybe useful to some, but I wanted more practical advice. I find it a bit confusing in its layout and have to search backwards and forwards for information I want.

As this book was written so long ago, I expected it to include a section on the preservation of vegetables using the water bath method. As this was one of my reasons for buying this particular publication, I was very disappointed that such a section was not included; it just concentrates on freezing vegetables. However, for everything else, it is an excellent book, with a good selection of recipes.

I have read this and several other mushroom cultivation books. This book, coupled with Stamet's Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms, makes for the absolute best reference materials for growing your own mushrooms.
That said, I'll mention the only thing that may disappoint a reader. His treatment of agar techniques in either of his cultivation books leaves a little to be desired. If you feel uncomfortable working with petri dishes after reading his sections on it, you may wish to check out "Laboratory Excercises in Microbiology" (ISBN 0-697-35443-1) by Harley and Prescott. It is a little more than a fellow needs to know about microbiology, but it is an excellent reference for aquainting on with aseptic agar techniques. Read More:

This is a super book for little ones.
In an age of rising childhood obesity this is a book that can introduce a child to a healthier way of eating.
The book folds out on each piece of fruit showing how you serve it (sliced, peeled etc) and using real photographs rather than illustrations introduces a child to something they too may like to try.
We all try to feed our child healthily (I know this) and many children will know these fruits and how delicious they are but place this book in a playgroup or mother and toddler group in a deprived area where children are more used to seeing Macdonalds than peas in their pod and it is a great way to take the mystery and fear out of these fruits.
