Valentine's day is creeping up on the Sohmas, and for a family that turns into animals when they're hugged by the opposite sex, this could be a problem.

Fortunately Natsuki Takaya doesn't resort to the obvious gags, in the third volume of "Fruits Basket." Instead, she introduces some new members of the Chinese zodiac, brings a couple back into the picture, and sheds some light on Shigure's shady motives for keeping Tohru in his house.

While on an endurance run, Tohru sees a white-haired man lying by the roadside, and rushes to help -- only to find that he's Hatsuharu Sohma, a punky teenager. He and Kyo soon get into a martial-arts (and verbal) free-for-all -- until Yuki collapses from an asthma attack. To get him back ... Read More:

For those of you who've been missing Hatori, this will definitely be one of your favourite volumes, as we finally get the backstory between him and Mayuko, the mysterious woman who went up with Shigure. (Shigure is beginning to get seriously annoying with all his scheming.) Meanwhile, Tohru and the younger Sohmas are at the beach. Yuki and Kyô both begin to realise how they feel and to come to terms with their feelings. ("Finally!" some of you may cry.)

This book reminds me of the kind of gardening book my Grannie would have used.

It's laid out in an easy-to-follow style and Diana Galligan's writing is chatty and inviting. She gives plenty of straightforward advice on everything from how to look after a vegetable plot to what to plant when and how to store it (very useful).

There are no photographs, but the centre fold-out pages have plenty of colour sketches of vegetables common vegetables, which are olde worlde and quite endearing.

I'd have loved a little more detailed information - for example what exactly is meant by "early autumn" vs "late autumn", but I'm sure I'd work it out.

Being quite a small book makes it easy to dip into to learn ... Read More:

Colourful and descriptive, this book takes you through every season of your vegetable garden- a must for those of us who think the season only runs from spring to autumn. It shows you have to utilise all 12 months. Unlike other gardening books, this also gives you interesting and different recipes to take your home grown produce from earth to the table. - A great buy!

I found this volume one of the best that I have read, it exsposes Kyo's past, which really accounts for his bitterness. I found it a real tear jerker. Normaly when it gets to a good part in fruits basket , i jump up and down and go crazy cause its like wooow that happended. but when i read this volume and a good bit happended (which it does)i just sat staring into space, so dumbfounded, then i started crying (i get really into manga) - i hope that doesnt give too much away but im telling you this volume is really good.:-)

In Vol. 11, we finally get to see most of the younger members of the Jyuunishi interacting together and with Tohru. Only Ayame is missing from the gathering, but since this is a rather serious installment of the FB saga, that's appropriate. The first few chapters build up to the revelation of Akio's true identity. Other than that, Tohru and Rin finally meet (with Rin being as brattish yet amazing as ever) and my love for Momiji grew even stronger with this book.

Jane Grigson was one of the leading cookery writers of her generation with some similarity to the writing talents of the great Elizabeth David, in that her books combine superb writing with impeccable research.
In fact in this book she acknowledges Elizabeth David (ED), 'whose taste in the matter of fruit is unequalled' and other cute references such as in the article about 'pickled cherries', followed by a recipe for 'Cherry Brandy', `ED's Black Fruit Fool' - `a recipe for devotees of prunes and dried fruit and `ED`s Sweet Flan Pastry` - `easy to remember and efficient in practice'.

`It is from a love of fruit that Jane wrote her book, the much awaited companion volume to the enormously popular and successful `Jane Grigson Vegetable ... Read More:

Fruits Basket follows the life of orphaned high school student Tohru Honda. When her mother is killed in a car crash she is forced to go and live with her Grandfather. We join the story when she has had to temporarily leave her grandfather's house, unwilling to impose on any of her friends she opts to live in a tent. Despite working herself into the ground she remains cheerful and one day stumbles across a house in the woods in which live some of the mysterious of Sohma family. Feeling sorry for her (after the loss of her tent/home) they invite her to stay and immediately put her to work cleaning up the male dominated household.

Tohru soon learns that the boys of the house are not quite what they seem, they are possessed by the spirits of the ... Read More:

As a huge fan of 'The Gourmet Gardener' by Bob Flowerdew, I ordered this book and it too would have received 5 stars from me because it also contains a wealth of useful information (e.g. advantages and disadvantages of different varieties, companion planting).

However, the more I read it in detail, the more frustrating it became. For example, the section on garlic listed just three varieties - Oz Garlic Rosea, Oz Garlic White and Aussie White - instead of referring to the four colour types of white, rose, violet and red and their differing characteristics. Similarly, the sections on both potatoes and apples referred to common varieties in Australia - which is not much use to me in Northern Europe! All became clear to me when I read 'The Yearly ...
