I read the other reviews and then bought this book for my daughter. We both thought it was great, it's almost like it was written for her, we have tried about 4 of the recipes so far, love the way it is written and the illustrations, it is what it is, a small, funny, vegan book whith some good recipes.

"Ethical Vegetarianism offers just the right mix of 'food for thought.' The movement for a more peaceful world has for too long hungered for a book like this. Here, truly, is a volume devoted to what we eat that belongs alongside those more numerous books describing how to cook it." -- Tom Regan, author of The Case for Animal Rights
"The writings of history's most important proponents of ethical vegetarianism are gathered here in one volume. This book is a wealth of information for all those concerned with ending the sufferings of animals." --Ingrid E. Newkirk, President of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals
"This book is noteworthy for three reasons. First, it gathers together ... Read More:

I found this book originally in my local library and having read it for five minutes decided I had to go out and buy a copy! It is simply the best vegan cookbook I have ever found. This is probably because I am the only vegan in the household and so the amounts given in the book are perfect - they really are the right amount. However my housemates, who are all meateaters, were also pleasantly surprised when I cooked them a recipe from the book! My advice is especially try the scrambled tofu and leek. Yummy!

I found the dietry information at the beginning of this book quite useful but as a person who does not eat animal-derived foods and therefore has always paid attention to this sort of information there are only so many times I can be told the same 100 fascinating facts about nutrition without my eyes rolling into the back of my head from boredom. Did you know that vitimin C is essential for human health and can be found in citrus fruits? No? Congratulations, you must be the last person on Earth not to know it. You can come out of the cupboard now and start living with the rest of us again.
The dietry stuff is just on the opening ten pages or so. Most of the book is taken up with recipies. Lordy, Miss Scarlet! What recipies! Just the descriptions ... Read More:

Not all vegans are tree hugging transcendental meditators living in a hippie commune and spending all their time making tye-dye hemp t-shirts. But that's the impression you get from this cook book!
These recipes are actually in there:
Transcendental Tofu
The Good Shepherd Pie
Nirvana's Nori Roll
Holy Hummus Wrap
Jai to the Most High Sunflower Seed Dip
Yes! Seriously!
It's all a bit too spiritualist for my liking. And recipes call for "filtered water" instead of plain old "water". Which brings me onto my next point. If you live somewhere where you can get access to crazy hippie ingredients - great! :) If not, try a different cook book. Almost every recipe calls for one or more of the following ... Read More:

My main issue with this book is that most of the recipes are simply variations of each other. I mean there must be at least a dozen variations on Boston Cream Pie--does anyone like Boston Cream Pie that much? (Apart from the author, obviously) The book seems made up of cheesecake, the aforementioned Boston Cream Pie, fruit tart, and cream pie variations. It just seems like she could have suggested a few variations and left it up to readers to experiment. Now, I have to confess I haven't actually made anything out of this cookbook--I just haven't been inspired--maybe the lack of pictures? Plus, her cheesecake recipe looks exactly like mine, but doubled, with some sort of tofu topping", and with more complicated directions. I suppose it's worth buying if you're really ... Read More:

Normally, I am not a great fan of cooking books without pictures (must be to do with some strange inner desire to know what the heap of mush I produced was actually supposed to look like) but this book is an exception and has become a real favourite of mine. The recipes are not overly complicated and work even if you couldn't get hold of all ingredients. Depending on how much time and effort you wish to invest, you can find simple dishes or ideas for a big and varied Indian dinner.
Vegans and non-vegans should find this a real treat!
