I have had this book on my shelves for a couple of years now and unfortunately didnt look at it being more into the low fat way of eating. Ive been vegetarian for approx 20 years and have been putting on weight since a cholecystectomy 12 years ago. The key thing for this diet is that this book has enabled me to diet without feeling hungry - cravings are at a minimum. Weight loss wise the first couple of weeks I lost nearly a stone and loss has been around 2-3 lbs since then. While it requires some form of dedication from the dieter, the author has adapted low carb foods for the vegetarian/vegan diet amazingly well and with great creativity. This has helped me no end. I especially like the rice alternative and when you are needing a sweet ... Read More:

This book was written by a respectable medical researcher whose works has been published in various medical journals...
My wife and I have use those recipes and to our surprise the food look visually appealing as well as delicious!
We have found the recipes easy to use. It took significantly less than than other vegetarian cookbooks (some of which are loaded with fat) took about 2 hours to make. On average, we found it took from 1/2 to 1 hour to prepare.
I also highly recommend reading Part One in Ornish's earlier book, "Eat more, weigh less". That essential section laid out, in depth, the foundataion for this book.
Critics who said Ornish's program is extreme or hard have obviously NEVER tried ... Read More:

This book is very informative and includes lots of information on the healing power of foods. It explains cancer to the reader; how it starts and what you can do (diet wise) to help prevent and treat cancer.
The book provides charts and tables with lots of information – including the worrying statistic that approximately 33-50 per cent of breast cancer is preventable by diet. Although this is only an approximation it is estimated by cancer charities that 30 per cent of cancers are contributed to by poor diets – so a good diet is not just about weight loss anymore but disease prevention.
This book provides information on cancer and all sorts of food and drink- from meat and vegetables to pulses and alcohol. It suggests that ... Read More:

I write a food column for a little newspaper in Ohio. A man I interviewed avoided surgery and did indeed reverse his heart disease by eating a diet of less than 10% fat. He became so inspired he wrote his own book of low fat recipes!

The book has an interesting introducion, however it does not contain much more knowledge than that which the average Indian already has. Likewise the cuisine has very little ayurved involved and is much more Gujurati, and is Ghee laden.
You'd be better off speaking to an indian-born person and taking a few cooking lessons from them as opposed to buying this book.

This book is wonderful, the recipes are easy and tasty and don't depend too heavily on soy. In fact, it takes various allergies into account. So far I have made boursin, guacamole grillers, mozzeralla, gruyere toasts and an AMAZING quiche which is indistinguishable from the real thing. It isn't cheese so don't buy it and then moan, it is uncheese which is much nicer.

Gabrielle Chavez brings a sensible approach to eating for wellbeing.
Her information is succinct, and the recipes are delightful. Who can resist cake for breakfast! My husband is the victim to his own eating habits, and recently was diagnosed with diabetes. After I purchased this book and left it out for him to "accidentally" pick up, he tried to sell me (already on the way to raw living) on going raw several times a week!
That is the greatest feeling to have someone who was not in the least interested in trying this way of life, and food, suddenly begin to preach to the choir!
My children have also taken to Raw Gourmet, and enjoy making some of the smoothies, and really enjoy making the dehydrator buscuits.

It was high time for someone to write a book based on the principles of Yogic cooking. Being a Yoga Teacher myself and following the Yogic principles on eating sometimes students wonder how you can create great tasting dishes without onions, garlic, leeks, mushrooms, vinegar etc, now I can tell them just get this book. The recipies are visually well presented and easy to follow, there is something for everyone. I can heartily recommend this book to anyone interested in the practice of Yoga and a healthy vegetarian diet.
