I bought this book and I'm very unimpressed indeed. There is a lot of diabetes health information, although I knew all of this already and just wanted some new recipe ideas, but unfortunately, as a cookbook it's very poor indeed- there aren't very many recipes, and there are whole pages dedicated to things which should really IMHO just be footnotes. One "recipe" for example is for "lighter side of blt" which is basically telling you to make up a blt using shop-bought faux bacon and wholemeal bread... as if that isn't glaringly obvious! There's a couple of okay recipes thrown in, but lots of fillers. If it's recipes you're after, buy a regular vegan cookbook instead, and just avoid using sugar and processed "white" foods.

I bought this book because, although I don't have heart disease, I do have a family history of heart disease on both sides of the family. Having read the book, I decided to follow the nutrition plan for a trial period of 3 months. I am six weeks into that trial period now and it hasn't been too hard to follow although I would admit I have deviated from it on 4 or 5 meals during the six weeks so I haven't followed it absolutely rigidly. I took my blood cholesterol today. My previous 10 readings were all between 4.4mmol/L(170mg/dL) and 6.9mmol/L (265mg/dL) but after six weeks on this plan I recorded my lowest ever reading of 2.5mmol/L (~95mg/dL) and my ratio of total cholesterol to HDL was 4 which is well within the healthy range.
Currently in remission from cancer, I decided I would do all I could to avoid it returning again. Although I previously had a relatively healthy diet, I was not a vegan, and so very reluctantly, I bought this book.
The first thing I noticed, was that unlike many other vegan cookery books, I was familiar with most of the ingredient listings. The few ingredients that I was not familiar with, were all available at my local supermarket and/or health food chain.
You have to be aware that vegan foods do often take a little more time and effort to prepare, but the results are definitely worth it, and of course you can always freeze ahead.
I have discovered how versatile things like tofu and soya milk are. Using these ... Read More:

In spite of good intentions,I've never used this book because it requires measuring in the American cup system. I'm still loathe to use metric and rely on my trusty imperial scales, but this is a cup too far. Also the book assumes you understand the Weight Watchers points system. I've never been to WW (nor do I have any inclination to) so this book has left me wanting more than it was prepared to offer.

This is not a bad book. But Amadea Morningstar's first Ayurvedic Cookbook is a classic. It's brilliant. This tries to do a similar thing but to "westernise" the food and to me it just doesn't work. I have both this and her first book. The first one gets constant use. This sits on my shelf and gets pulled down every so often, only to be returned. I can see what she wants to do. To produce recipes which are apprpriate for people who don't like Indian food. But the recipes in her first book bear no resemblence to what gets served up in Britain's curry houses. So even if you think you don't like Indian food, I'd bet you'd like most of the recipes in the first book. So this one just seems redundant.

The recipes in this book are unusual, in that you won't find too many recipes that you will find familiar.
However, the emphasis of this book is on health and as such, the way of healthy eating in Chinese Philosophy is also different.
The only problem I found with it, is that unless you live next door to a Chinese Supermarket, a lot of the ingredients are really hard to find and you will have to learn how to substitute or just use the recipes, for which you can actually get the ingredients.
I have to say, that there are one or two very good recipes here and worth it just for these.
