I first tried this selection of 1,000 calorie daily menus, 24 years ago, after the birth of my second child. I lost 3st in as many months. Over the years I have put back on some of this weight and so decided to return to this book 4 days ago. I have already lost 3lbs and feel a lot less tired.
The book is set out in seasons and the recipes include masses of fresh seasonal vegetables, fruit and nuts. Sugar features but rarely and fat is the monounsaturated type and used sparingly. Most meals are very filling and tasty.

I had high hopes for this book, having ready many of Deepak Chopra's other works, including some of his nutrition-focused courses.
The book does cover the basics of nutrition and why it's important to eat from the "six tastes" with each meal, which was useful.

Parts of it are pretty heavy going - It's clear Stephen Walsh is a "databuster" rather than a new Patrick Holford but there are great "Veganism for Dummies" sections at the end of each chapter.
Pages and pages of research - Walsh must have spent years in The British Library finding all those studies.
He says you could eke out an extra 10 years of healthy living compared with following the average western diet - it's got to be worth the £7.95 for the chance of that alone!
Hopefully this book will inspire you to buy one of the excellent new healthy vegan cookbooks on Amazon (ISBN 0600611906 £7.19), visit The Vegan Society Website and make a difference to people, animals and the environment.
