I have been a vegetarian for 7 years, but this is the first nutrition book I've bought. It has taught me so many new facts about different foods and what nutrients they contain, nearly all plant foods contain protein, I always thought it was only nuts and legumes! This book is clear and well laid out. Its not too biased either, and just states the facts. It has plenty of clear tables comparing nutritional values of different foods, and tells you what pattern of nutrients you need to be healthy. It has chapters on protein, minerals (iron, zinc especially), calcium, vitamins from fruits and vegetables, vitamin B12, also info about the vegetarian diet for all stages of life. It provides examples of good daily food plans, and has some recipes at ... Read More:

A truly strange cookbook. On the surface, the regional sections seem great, until you speak to people from these far-off places, and realise that they've never heard of such a dish. Authenticity aside, this is much more of a winter book than many veggie cookbooks out there, whjich is brillient. Lots of spicy things and warming, soups, etc. There are lots of sumemr things too, so don't get the wrong idea its just more balanced than most books. It's useless if you're wanting to cook straight from your cupboard, it's more of a special occasion book. It has an excelent at menu planer at the back. I have to say that the cous-cous dumplings are my favourite, and have become a cold day staple. I have never seen a stranger collection of recipes collected ... Read More:

This is an extraordinary and extremely disturbing book. For anyone who cares about the welfare of animals, the environment, health issues and indeed the survival of our planet, I would say Pamela Rice's reasons are incontestable. She has set out to prove, by exhaustive research, that the voracious meat and fish-eating habits of, primarily the western world, particularly America, is the cause of animal cruelty in the extreme, disastrous over-fishing of rivers and oceans, land and river polution and ill-health on a scale never before experienced. The sections on the treatment of factory-farmed animals are horrific.
I was also very impressed by the sections on water and world hunger, for instance, most informed people know ... Read More:

This is the single best book on vegetarian nutrition in print today. I cannot say enough good things about it. The authors are very familiar with the latest nutritional studies and cover curent issues such as omega-3 fatty acids. No myths or new age babble here. The authors don't pretend there are no nutritional pitfalls in a vegetarian diet, instead pointing out areas of concern and how to deal with them. This includes not just obvious issues like B12 in a vegan diet, but also other critical and not always addressed issues such as riboflavin. For those who don't rely on dairy for their dietary calcium, non-dairy sources of calcium are not just listed, but there is detailed discussion of the dietary factors that both help and hinder calcium ...
