I found this an easy-going read and the protagonist has a fairly compelling personality as anyone seems to when they stand on the fringes of "normality". The format is well-executed and original.

However, I didn't find the "teenage" voice that authentic - it stank of an adult trying to be a teenager and although it wasn't terrible, it didn't work for me.
I had a few other doubts about it that I couldn't shake: the protagonist goes from not knowing what weed is to buying it and smoking it on his own in a blink. And I really wanted to scream that the Smiths have written much better songs than "Asleep"!
The ending struck me as plain peculiar: it didn't really seem to fit with anything else and seemed like it had been ... Read More:

Children & Baby Books : Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret

Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret

This has to be the best 'find' of 2008 for me (or, more precisely, for my daughter). Blume has successfully tapped into the teenage coming-of-age mind and tackled so many feelings of inadequacy, humiliation, insecurity, loneliness, fear ... This is a really clever book that every young teenager will be able to get something from. There are so many answers there - to questions that the young teenager might not want to ask - or to things that they haven't even realised are problems. My daughter hasn't stopped talking about this book and how much she got out of it. One of those gems ...

I thought this book was cleverly written, from the view of a 9 year old boy - it is only because we have historical hindsight of the events that are being described by the boy, who does not understand, that the full story plays out in your imagination as the story unfolds.
I did not expect the story to end the way it did. I was gripped.

Love Lessons is another foray into the hormone-rushing world of the teenage girl and this time, Jackie really means business! Tackling a subject she herself has admitted to being 'difficult', Wilson has given herself a double-bubble helping of trouble by veering away from 'typical teens' like the delightful Ellie, Magda and Nadine; instead presenting us with Prudence, a girl with an unfortunate name, home life and wardrobe. Prudence is about as far away from the norm as you can get. We have, of course, been presented with children from dysfunctional families before (The Diamond Girls and The Illustrated Mum are prime examples of this) but by today's standards Prudence and her chubby sister Grace really are outsiders. Not only are they home-schooled by their bossy, ... Read More:

The Worry Website is Mr Speed the class teacher's idea of a Web site for his primary school pupils to write their worries down anonymously and then get help with solving them from their peers. Jacqueline Wilson has linked the worries of six children in the book through six short stories, and a seventh story is contributed by 12-year-old Lauren Roberts, winner of an online competition. Each story refers to the other class members, so that they do not sit in isolation, and "Greg's Worry", the second story, links particularly well with the first story, "Holly's Worry". From divorced parents to living with a disability, and from feeling useless at school to nightmares at home, Wilson has sensitively touched on the small and big problems that worry eight and nine-year-olds. ... It is great to see that this timelss classic is still very popular. Like most of the sailing community Swallows and Amazons created in me a passion for sailing that has stayed with me through adult life. The adventures of John, Susan, Titty and Roger are what many children dream of. The whole series really introduced me to reading as i just wanted to hear more of their adventures. So I would recommend any adult buying these books for their childern.

I am a huge Pratchett fan. This book stands out as one of his darkest and funniest yet. For those nay sayers who give this 2 stars, it is more down to the fact that they want Discworld to stay the Colour of Magic forever and this is where TP has succeeded for years; he has allowed the Discworld to develop away from the one liner, and into characters, situations, jokes and prose that develop like a good wine throughout the book.
If Jingo was Dulce et Decorum est, then Monstrous Regiment is Strange Meeting.

This revision guide summarises clearly and concisely all the science you need up to and including Year 9, with sections on Life Processes, Materials and Physical Processes. And it's great for learning because it explains everything in an entertaining and accessible format (check out the cold polar bear and the elephant in stilettos!). Our children have worked steadily through it preparing for exams, and the pages are getting dog-eared.

Conclusion: a comprehensive and well-written guide to KS3 Science. Wish we'd had books like this when I was at school.
