Having watched the film "The Golden Compass" I bought and read the first book ("His Dark Materials") which I found very enjoyable.

This is a convenient way to get two of the greatest plays of the twentieth century. My preference (and it will be that of most people, I think) is for 'A View from the Bridge', originally written in verse to echo the style of a Greek tragedy, and that is really what it is, with the downfall of Eddie Carbone and the catastrophe that surrounds it inevitable, as lawyer Alfieri, whom Miller uses as a kind of observer/narrator, is aware almost from the word go. It is an extraordinarily powerful play, made the more compelling, as always with Miller, by the vigour and rhythms of the longshoreman's language, so unlike that of the Salem villagers in 'The Crucible' or poor Willy Loman in 'Death of a Salesman' but just as convincing and just as powerful. This book is quite light-hearted, and as another review says, probably contains everything you need to pass- get a C grade. It doesn't, however, contain the information i would personally say you need for the A*-B Therefore is better for foundation. I have now bought the York Notes revision book, which is much better for higher grades!!!

I am only give it a couple of stars for the insight into life in Pompeii and the lovely pictures, but I do not think it is that great for learning Latin.
I am teaching Latin to my daughter and we started of with this book. She did not do very well, although she was keen to learn. We now use the more traditional "So you really want to Learn Latin", published by Galore Park, which is brilliant - lots of exercises, with the grammar taught in a logical order. You go straight into 4 tenses of "amo" in the first chapter and my daughter is coming on leaps and bounds now. My main problem with the CLC is that it is "all over the place", ie you start by learning only the nom. and acc. of nouns and by the end of book 1, only the dat. is added. I feel it ...
