Having more time on my hands in semi-retirement I have been revisiting some of the keen enthusiasms of my youth. I was interested in establishing why one's interest had been so captivated in those tender years.
I am pleased to say I hugely enjoyed this compendium of four stories. The author is a convincing and exhilarating storyteller. The heroes are of course Biggles, Algy and Ginger who are often perilously close to disaster. Although one suspects that the heroes will always pull through, such is the assurance of the writing that one retains a real sense of impending doom until the plot is successfully resolved. I picked this up when browsing through WH Smith and ended up reading the entire thing there in the shop. It has laugh out loud cat antics and I only wish I had the excuse of children to buy it for.

I'm surprised at how overwhelmingly positive all the feedback on this book is - it's pretty decent but I've got some reservations.
Firstly, the good bits: it's nicely structured and covers a comprehensive range of topics. It is mainly very read-able and doesn't skimp on the more basic detail. Plus it doesn't shy away from taking a few pages to explain a topic fully and clearly. My main bugbear with it is the slightly patronising, primary-school tone it has most of the time. The book is littered with pictures of a cartoon character called "Fizz" (as in, fizz-ics... geddit?) doing "hilarious" things to illustrate some of the points. This book is extremly useful for any school student studying 'the crucible' as it helps you to get to grips with the plot, the characters and the action. It helped me tremendously.

I cannot express enough excitement about this book.I thought at first this would be a soso look back book as other weekly comic books have been.This is so much better than all the other nostalgia only books.
Look and learn was always more varied than most comics.Where else would you find actor,Edmund Kean alongside castles and historical figures like Dick Turpin and literary figures like Robin Hood.An entire story of the Trigan Empire comic strip is spread across this lovely large book. i have got a Star Trek Ships of the Line calender for the past 10 years, the pictures & designs are simply fantastic, ok you may have to be either a star trek fan or a sci-fi fan to fully appreciate the images, in either case you will not be disappointed.
