I admit, I'm bemused by this book. On one hand, I wanted to slap down five stars because it was so very compelling - I read it in two days, which is no mean feat when you're the working mother of two small children! But at the same time, while reading I kept having moments of, 'Hold on, that's just too implausible, even for a book about body-hopping ghosts.'
I think - at the risk of sounding flippant - that this book suffers for being the author's first novel. If it hadn't been, I suspect many of the things in it that struck me as rushed, superfluous or confused wouldn't have been there. I also think that the chosen (or assigned?) genre ended up being a detriment: yes, it's set in a high school, but the themes are very much adult ... Read More:

This has become one of my favourite books. I've always loved the "witches" series and the "nac mac feegle" who appear in Carpe Jugulum invaded my brain, kicked a few bottles around and dossed down.
This is, as others have said, the third in the "Tiffany Aching" series. I admit I enjoyed the first, wasn't too struck with the second (to start with), but with this one Pratchett is back to his best. It hooked me from the start.
Pratchett's talent and skill is in the folklore and the facts which he uses in the books, the little things, like the old belief in summer and winter Gods, the laying out and sitting with the dead, etc. For me it is these small factual titbits that add to the story and make it more than your typical 'story ... If you have read "His Dark Materials Trilogy" and enjoyed them you might be asking yourself the very question my title asks; where are they now?
Well... If you take a chance to read this book you will get some idea.
Here we look in on Lyra about two years after the end of the book "The Amber Spyglass".
Some people might describe this as a cheap money making ploy, but I think true fans (like myself) that were left at the end of the last book sobbing into their tissues, would enjoy this.
Yes, it might be a bit pricely, let us not forget that this short story is about the same length as a long chapter. But, we get the cool map and other paraphernalia that have fallen out between worlds into ours.

I bought this alongside the Spanish Grammar book as they are both set books for the OU course. High St book shops are a lot more expensive,I saved £5.00!! Both books are set out in a really easy & logical format.
Highly recommended

We were given this dictionary at an Open Day at Harper Collins. And thank goodness we were. Its an excellent dictionary with colourful text. It has great examples of how to use each word. The central section includes bits about verbs, days of the week etc. so its more than just a dictionary. It also links to some things on the internet.

This book appealed to year 5. They loved it infact. They voted it 5/5 in the book club. The boys loved it as much as the girls, even though the main character is a girl.
