Dan and Amy had always felt that they were Grandma Grace's favorites. Ever since their parents had died, she'd always had time to spend with them. She appreciated their gifts and always encouraged their creativity. When she passed, Dan and Amy were deeply saddened. All the relatives showed up at the funeral but really they were all just hoping to get a piece of Grace's vast fortune.
Grace being a rather unique woman herself, arranged to have the last word. After the funeral, a group of the relatives was quickly ushered into a room where the will was to be read. Each person was offered a choice. They could either leave the room with a million dollars or they could get a clue that would lead them on a quest. The first group to find ... Read More:

This is the best book i have ever read and it is great for people my age(which is 12). It was a tad rude at times but you get used to it as you go through the book. I would definately reccommend it to anyone who likes a laugh and a cry at times.

My Daughter is Home Schooled due to illness, her Tutor read this to her as part of her English lessons. The first chapter was captivating and got her hooked on the story, each week they would read a chapter and even I became interested.
The Story is about a teenage girl who is evacuated to Wales with her brother to live with a Shop owner and his sister.
Its an interesting read although not one I would have chosen for myself but as the book progressed I became more and more interested, I enjoyed listening to the tutor reading it aloud, it came alive (even Mums like stories read to them) even though I was in another room pretending to work!
I bought this Pullman book thinking it might be suitable for my 10 yr old daughter. She is doing a project on China so I thought it might bring in an interesting aspect on Chinese culture, as the main character is a Chinese girl called Lila.- Not only did the prose not live up to it's review status, I was shocked to discover that the imagery and moral values are totally unsuitable for young children.(The book has been recommended for 8 year olds and up).
Pullman's main push in his book seemed to be to subtly yet profoundly introduce the philosophies of atheism and humanism - with no hint of this on the cover.
My main concerns as a parent are;
1) The book undermines a child's confidence in his parents;"Didn't your father tell you..." ... Read More:

A well produced flip over card book, complete with its own loop of colourful knot free string. The explanations are easy to understand, no steps have been assumed. The illustrations are clear and thoughtfully drawn, supporting the text admirably. A helpful aspect in the design is that the piece of string that is to be moved next, is coloured red on the illustration. Being an American book , it has lost none of its meaning in a translation. The book has two sections. One for individual use where there are 4 figures to make and a second section for two people showing how to create the 5 repeating shapes. It is a good introductory book. Competent Cat's Cradle enthusiasts may need something more.

I bought this title as I already had the Literacy version which I loved. I wasn't as happy with the numeracy version, I felt it was not as easy to dip in to & hence why it got 4 stars instead of 5. Saying that it is till a good, fun numeracy book with plenty of creative ideas. In my opinion many of the ideas are more suitable for children in year 5 & 6, but the priciples can be applied to any year group. Worth the money though if you just want to 'pep' up your numeracy lessons.
