The Very Quiet Cricket is one of a number of books by the illustrator Eric Call, which tells the tale of growth and passage of time in the life of an insect, other books include, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Very Lonely Firefly. Like the other books The Very Quiet Cricket is beautifully illustrated throughout, and keeps the surprise until the very end, when we turn the final page to hear the soft chirp of the cricket. The story is held together by the employment of the same pattern throughout, greeting from another insect in his own manner, and then the cricket's desire and failure to return a reply. This scheme allows the child to predict the story and join in, and as such feel an active part in the telling of the tale. The child can ... Read More:

We bought the whole series of Amazing Machine books and my two year old son loves them. The pictures are big and bright and really capture the imagination. Perfect bedtime reading - the only problem being that he wants me to read them all !

Great book - I bought it for going away on holiday as a new book that would hold my toddler son's interest for a while, and he hasn't put it down since August! Personally I'm a bit bored of the book but then I'm not 2... Sturdy flaps, bright and bold colours, and educational - what more could you want? It is great for sharing and talking about the pictures and engines, but my son will also happily get it off the bookshelf and 'talk' himself through it on his own, usually at least once a day. Highly recommended!

My daughter absolutely loves reading this as well as Usborne's "Who's Making That Smell" - it's a truly interactive book with the flaps to lift and cute animals to search for on every page as well as the fun in guessing who's making what noise! Her favourite by far is the last page where she gets to shout along with the characters! It's a real treat for any child!

A wonderful read aloud for 1 and 2 year olds. Lovely illustrations and nice story but just doesn't quite have the pazzazz of the gruffalo and her other books (we own the lot). Too basic for my four year old but my one year old really enjoys it.

He's 7 months old, and does not cease to enjoy this book. He wants to hear it over and over again, and is always happy and excited when we read it to him. If you only get one book for your baby- get this one!

Both my son (now 20 months) and his cousin (3 years) were totally sold on Maisy from the onset through this lift-the-flap book. At bedtime, it is always the favourite choice and never fails to get squeals of delight and keep them both enthraled. This book has always helped to develop my son's vocabulary and has given his cousin the opportunity to play imagination games as she changes the situations and hiding places of the animals each time she reads the book.

"This Little Baby" is a cute and colourful little book with a black-and- white real baby picture on each page. There are phrases saying what each baby does (says hello, is ready to go, plays with his toys, makes lots of noise, lies down for a rest)...And at the last page there is a surprise - a mirror and a phrase saying "And this little baby is the one I love best!"
One of the first my daughter's books, easy to hold and turn pages, colourful enough to attract attention and fun enough to see other little babies.

Elephant Wellyphant is not my usual literary fare. I don't make a habit of hanging around in the children's section, but as a librarian, wandering in occasionally is an occupational hazard. I was shown a copy of Elephant Wellyphant by a colleague a few days ago and it blew my mind. This book takes one joke and mercilessly beats you around the head with it. There is no escape.
The title explains the main premise. It introduces the notion of an elephant and then proceeds to impart variations upon this theme. Wellyphant for example is an elephant in wellies. The deviation from the original concept of elephant grows as the book progresses, slowly testing ones facility to trust in these improbable elephantile occupations. The ordering ... Read More:
