This is an amazing, beautiful book. It looks at the world as a garden, looking at plant life and in particular how different plants are used. Highlights include a page showing a garden with a pull-up that shows different plants and what they are used for; a page of lift the flaps showing fruits and vegetables growing and in the more familiar form (i.e. as bought in the shop); three pull out books that show how jeans, rubber tyres and paper are made; a fantastic pop-up of a cargo ship detailing where certain food stuffs come from and other interesting facts (like how much beer and rum sailors drank) and a beautiful pop-up of a flower arrangement with each flower described under a flap. I orginally bought this book as a present for my nephew but haven't been able to part with it. Each page is full of delight and fun encouraging the exploration behind all the 'pop ups'to find the answers. Although I learnt nothing new (I'm over 60) a child would find plenty to make them open their eyes and see and understand that science is all around them from baking to music. I just wish this had been available when my children were little. I can't wait to have the excuse to buy the other books in the series.

This is another firm favourite from the Elmer series of board books. The book looks at lots of Elmer’s animal friends from Zebra to Lions and Polar Bears to Snakes - Elmer loves them all. With a little imagination you can make the book come alive even more. For example doing the hissing sound for the snake or the roar for the lion. When you get to the page with the kangaroo don't forget to bounce the book up and down. The final pages show all the animals and our little one points to each animal as we say their name thus reinforcing recognition. The board book is very robust and able to withstand lots of rough treatment. The colours are very bright and our little one responds very well to this book - five star fun!

When I showed the Squishy Turtle book to my little seven month old grandson for the first time his eyes widened and his little hands reached out for it rightaway. It was an instant success! He just loved the squishy noises he could make by rubbing the pages, and the bits on the pages that he could pull at. He liked the octopus tentacles and the little silver fin on another page.
I liked the size and thickness of the book and the softness of the cloth pages. It is very light in weight too. This makes the book very easy for a young child to handle, and there is no worry that he/she might hurt himself/herself. I've been reading this to my daughter, now eight', for the past five years at least. A short moral tale that lends itself to daft voices and silly accents with the opportunity to ad lib as and when. Because of its narrative flow it can also be put to music....I've done it many times.... It is without doubt her favorite bedtime story even now....its the perfect 5 to 10 minuter.

When my son turned 2 our health visitor came to do the usual check up and gave him his Bookstart pack which included the delightfully colourful "cock-a-moo-moo" and the rather bland and dull looking Owl Babies. cock a moo moo was read again and again and I just assumed the "dull" illustrations and not so "loud" and rather "bounce-less" narrative of Owl Babies would not captivate him so it found its way to the bottom of the toy box until my son pulled it out one day and asked to have it read to him, after which we were both hooked! It's great to have a compliation set of these three stories, although you may have to read all of them at once. You just can't beat Nick Sharatt and these three traditional stories have been well told in rhyme for the youngest to enjoy but the older ones too.
