My child cannot get enough of books; we stumbled across Lynley Dodd quite early in his life and by now have collected nearly everything she has written. While her books range from very good to excellent, Slinky Malinki is just genius: frankly the best children's book I've ever read (I must confess that I am a bit of a book snob, so this is a very high compliment).
At 18 months my child was captivated by the illustrations and events, and the ending fully met his need for drama and excitement. As a parent, I will never tire of reading this book (no mean feat!). It is BEAUTIFULLY written, even by adult standards. I am particularly impressed by the author's use of her extensive vocabulary and the fact that she sees no need to settle ... Read More:

I bought all 4 books from this collection, they are perfect for youngsters.
The pages are thick card, so not so easy to rip, bend or mutilate!!!
Any drool is easily wiped clean too :o)
Good little bedtime story books, with nice story, good colours & plenty of familiar faces from the TV progrm.
A firm favourite as a first book when I started reading properly to my son at about age 6 months. He's really enjoyed it ever since and although he now (at 1 year) is getting a bit more sophisticated, the joy he has in turning the pages is very apparent.
My 3 yr old seems more interested in the textures, but some of them are rather subtle. The more obvious ones seem to attract the 1 yr old more.
Very bold and uncluttered illustrations make this a very good first book.

She's the target audience, right? I'm a huge fan of Donaldson/Scheffler books, but this one isn't much fun to read aloud - for me! my daughter thinks it's great. She'd more or less memorised it in a couple of readings. I have already come to dread the repetition ('Come little monkey, come come come') and am frustrated by both the idiot butterfly and the ungrateful monkey. You can confidently go ahead and buy this book for your toddler to enjoy, but you may not have as good a time along with her.

My daughter absolutely loves this book! She is now 7 months but has enjoyed it from about 4 months. She now gets all giddy and excited when we pick the book up to read her - its a delight to see. Its simple but we've not got bored of reading it to her yet (and we've read it a lot!) because she gets such enjoyment out of it. Great size for slipping in your change bag and taking everywhere too!

We purchased this for our little girl over a year ago, and she still really enjoys it.
The book is based around a game of hide-and-seek. All the pigs are hiding in different places, some under the bed, another under a towel etc. To find each pig you have to lift up a little flap. Unlike in pop-up books the little flaps are securely attached and should remain so to a large extent (although minor repairs with celotape are easy when necessary). The small amount of words in the book are largely forgotten about as we search out the next pig.
She has enjoyed the book so much so that now she will hide from Wibbly Pig around the house. Buy it and enjoy it. Simple and fun.
