Okay, first, for the uninitiated, what is Carmina Burana? It is that piece of music which they play if someone (prizefighters love it) needs a particualrly ostentatious entrance. Those in the UK who remember the Old Spice ads of the 70's and 80's featuring a surfer - that's Carmina Burana; specifically the first and last track "O Fortuna", "Fortune, you are like the moon; waxing and waning, bringing one man good forune and the next man ill luck" being an approximate translation. It is one of those pieces everybody has heard if they watch television or films at all (Oh yes, John Boorman's Excalibur uses a version). So, subtle it ain't? Wrong! - it has some of the most beaufiful, subtle, sophisticated, and charming pieces of music in it. ... Read More:

I love the film. I love the music and love most of this album. Some tracks seem a bit strange such as the second one which is why I was a bit choosy as to which ones went onto my MP3 player. The main theme is haunting and deffinitely the best, the ceilidh music less memorable. All in all though this is a good soundtrack album. If only I could get hold of the film on DVD I would be very happy.

I should start my review by saying that as a Welshman living just a stone's throw from Karl Jenkins' home, I may be slightly biased but I'll try to give as balanced a view as possible.
There's certainly less of an ethnic feel to this latest release, and despite the ravings of a fellow reviewer here, the orchestrations sound fine to me (and before the one star reviewer asks, yes I am a classically trained musician).
Those of you who have enjoyed the recent Stabat Mater, the Armed Man etc will thoroughly enjoy Quirk. I'm fairly sure the decision to include Palladio was made by the marketing dept of the record company, and though I feel it's been done to death it's nice to have the 'definitive' version here.
Simply a marvellous performance and recording of Tchaikovsky's (slightly neglected) Manfred Symphony. The R.L.P.O play marvellously, with particularly characterful woodwinds, and Petrenko delivers a performance that has all the excitement of a live performance. The great melody in the strings in the final movement is delivered with a terrific sweep; this is a truly committed performance, and is very well recorded (much better than most record companies get in Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall).
At this price it's an absolute bargain. Tchaikovsky lovers don't hesitate!

This is now the 11th Christmas that this music has been part of the tradition of my holiday season, and although I've acquired numerous other holiday music collections over the years, this far surpasses any other collection that I own. It is difficult to do justice to this music by describing it in mere words. The collection ranges from the 14th to the 16th Century, and is unlike any other collection of Christmas music available. It evokes the true spirit of the Christmas season, is enlightening, inspirational, and transports the listener far from the trite elements of the 'modern' holiday season. No other choral group can compare to the Harry Christophers The Sixteen (named such as the group consists of four treble/mean, four alto, four tenor ... Read More:

Vladimir Ashkenazy must rank as one of the greatest pianists of the modern era. His blend of flawless technique and sensitive interpretation marks him out as being uniquely placed to deliver as near to definitive performances as it is possible to get. This set of piano concerti was my introduction to his work, and I remain as impressed now as I was when I first heard them. He is ably supported by a rich and warm sound from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by the incomparable Sir Georg Solti. Ashkenazy was apparently apprehensive about approaching Beethoven and attempting to play him in the West when he emerged from the Soviet Union as a young man in the sixties; he need not have been. His command of the tonal energy and colours of the piano works is unrivalled. ... Read More:

I think this is a very welcome release.
Einaudi is a composer, so therefore he should be flattered and expect his works to be recorded. Jeremy Limb is a very talented pianist who has also recorded for Naxos.

One of the all time great performances of 'La Fille' - thankfully captured on film for us all to savour forever.
A perfect partnership for this ballet where both dancers share perfect chemistry. Carlos Acosta already an international ballet star is in perfect form - his sense of timing and comedy blends well with the complex Aston style. The beautiful, cheeky and sunny Marinella Nunez shines gloriously as Lise - a role she was born to play. Make no mistake, Argentine born Nunez is one of the finest dancers of her generation. Covent Garden and the british ballet world has already fallen head over heals in love with this lovely lady - apart from her obvious elegance and talent she also possesses the likeability factor - her genuine warmth makes people smile.
