Neil Marshall's movies have managed to be entertaining despite their derivative content, Doomsday however is neither original or good. Marshall obviously loved "Escape From New York" and "Mad Max 2" as a lad because he's decided to make a sloppy, spliced together montage of the two. The movie opens with a great clunkly lump of exposition in an attempt to sow up some of the enormous holes in the plot...its a horrible piece of narrative that serves as warning for what was to come. Both of the films on which this is based had a humorous element but the humour was pitch black and perfectly balanced..."Doomsday" suffers from the same problem as "Waterworld" in that you can never quite work out whether it is supposed to be ludicrous or not...rock ... How such unutterable tripe came to be created is beyond me. Despite distinguished creators, a decent cast and a respectable budget, we got something that was badly written, badly acted and looked cheap. Which doesn't even begin to adequately describe the mind-boggling badness of it all. Their historical and archaeological advisor seems to have been present only to ensure that all traces of accuracy were removed. Alarm bells already started ringing in my head as soon as the Templars were mentioned - writers of fiction seem unable to escape the rubbish about them being guardians of secret knowledge and all that rot which Dan Brown and a host of pseudo-historians got rich on. Hustle is pure brilliance. You watch the episodes and you think wow that was a brilliant con. Its great how they dont show you how they did the con until the end of the episode. Some of the cons are so good that once youve been told how they were done you want to watch it again to see if you can spot the bits you missed. Its got comedy and the whole thing is brilliant. Great acting and great cons. In my opinion its better than the oceans trilogy. The group of characters work perfectly together. 10 outa 10. >>More Details

Kenneth Branagh's film of As You Like It received a pretty cool critical reception as I remember. Amazon reviewers don't appear to be overwhelmed either. I came to it with low expectations but enjoyed it far more than I ever hoped I would. Yes - the 19th century Japanese setting is a bit of a problem. It is hardy what one expects to encounter in this play. The (Sumo) wrestling scene is frankly comical - I don't think Shakespeare intended us laugh hysterically at this point! More worryingly, Branagh tries to carry the Japanese setting over into the Forest of Arden. The main problem is that this is one of Shakespeare's most English plays. From the makers of Spooks, and Life on Mars, Hustle is again, a cut aabove. The BBC shows it can screen some pretty impressive stuff, with the twists and turns, the focus on detail and plot development. The result - a group of characters, that by today's standards are some of the most hated people in society, and shows a 'human' side, unlike anything ever shown before, using ideas like, 'Never Cheat an Honest Man'. The characters are well chosen, and the on-screen chemistry is over-flowing. Adrian Lester plays Michael Stones, GBH convicted leader of the group of long and short con-artists. Marc Warren (a.k.a Pvt. Blithe - 'Band of Brothers') once again, lives up to his standard, and plays convincingly, the over-eager, full-of-himself Danny Blue. ... Read More: >>More Details

The joyous sweep of Branagh's "Much Ado" or the logic of the concept in his "Twelfth Night" are missing. The cuts are too great and the song and dance numbers can outstay their welcome, so that the unique flavour and pleasures of the play get lost. Branagh should have had the courage to include the deleted scenes in the DVD version. That said there are some great turns from the Anglo-American cast and the ending is spot on for the melancholy/humour balance. And at least it isn't set in Japan! >>More Details

Silent Witness is a long-running British television thriller series made by the BBC's in-house Drama Serials production department. As it is created by Nigel McCrery,a former murder squad detective, and based on real forensic pathologist from Sheffield one gets an impressive ring of reality. The series is often criticised for showing the pathologist actively investigating the crime which is not a pathologist duty. I feel that is an unfair criticism as this is not a documentary on the work of pathologists but a "crime novel". Who would critise Agatha Christie for having Miss Marple investigating crimes when usually old spinster do not do that? Once again the HUSTLE crew have not failed to please. They have presented us with another six episodes of this great programme. I bought this because I liked series one and I have not been disappointed. Watch out for episode six - it involves the crown jewels! Series 3 of the classic BBC series stars Amanda Burton as Dr Sam Ryan a pathologist. This is the Dutch import but is in English Language with removable subtitles. This series contains the following episodes An Academic Exercise, Fallen Idol, Devided Loyalties and Brothers In Arms. I won't go into plot details and ruin any story lines for you - needless to say the stories are up to the usual high standard of Silent Witness. Each story is presented over two episodes as they were originally shown and are spread over 4 disks. Knowing how long BBC 2Entertain take to release Silent Witness dvds over here (how long did we have to wait for series 2 to come out?) it is probably going to be a while before we see series 3 over here.
