There are not enough words to express how much I truly adore this movie, it's legendary! I could watch this every day and still not get bored, I'm not even going to wait until I have kids to try and justify me buying it.

The service comedy is a genre almost as old as cinema itself and, whether it's Charlie Chaplin or Victor McLaglen and Edmund Lowe in the trenches, Andy Griffith befuddling his sergeants, the Carry On team on the assault course or Steve Guttenberg and co at the Police Academy, has an almost immutable formula that is never, ever departed from: through mildly comic misadventure misfit(s) find themselves in the army/navy/air force/police force, are hopelessly unprepared for the harsh realities of basic training, fumble every task yet somehow come out of it all as the perfect soldier/sailor/airman/cop and prove themselves in a mildly comic baptism of fire. Private Benjamin does absolutely nothing to fix what ain't broke, contenting itself to offer the odd slight ... Read More:

Surely any film that boasts Jack Nicholson as a cast member needs to give him a starring - ie prominant - role? You might think so, but the producers here evidently didn't. This films problem is the lack of humour - think of the situation and what its based on: if anything is ripe for parody and humour, the deadly earnestness of TV news and the mores of those who produce it is. The whole thing neglects this in favour of mushy sentimentality; we follow around Hurt, Hunter and Brooks's characters through various romantic senarios of which most people have been bored by since Hollywood first hit on the idea. One of the ideas the film initially seeks to challenege - the dumming down of TV news - seems strangely appeased by the ending; and all in all you find yourself thinking ... Read More:

A movie more than two hours long about the life of a Musician/Composer, what you might expect is a film, though full of good music, would bore the knobs off your TV Set - be prepared to be pleasantly surprised if you haven't seen this!
This is one of the greatest movies to kick off the sixties - considering it has not been so well-acclaimed when it was made as a big feature for the ever popular Dirk Bogarde, and has gone almost unnoticed with regards to any of his back catalogue of DVD releases - this title being of extremely limited availability.
Ironically, the movie does not turn out so much a memorable vehicle for Bogarde, but this has nothing to do with him as an actor or his performance, but this is a picture full of extremely great performances ... Read More:

Twilight Zone The Movie was always a special film for me as it featured a return to the twisted universe of Rod Serling for veteran composer Jerry Goldsmith, who had cut his teeth on low budget shows of its kind in the late 1950s and early 1960s. When the film was announced on Blu Ray this was good news, as by and large the four segments still stand up well as stories (if you can stand the over-sentimental mawkishness of the Spielberg entry and the dire "acting" of the prologue in the car anyway...)
However, early reviews and even the reverse of the Blu Ray box stated that the sound was in mono, which put me off a lot. However, upon purchasing this I was delighted to find that the audio is actually a superb 5.1 mix, with Goldsmith's powerful score pushed to the rear speakers a ... Read More:
