DVD : Bambi II

Bambi II

starring: Patrick Stewart, Alexander Gould, Brendon Baerg
directed by: Brian Pimental
April 24, 2006

The original Bambi is a true masterpiece in every way. For me, no other animated film tops it - not even Disney's crowning achievement, The Lion King. It is simply one of the best animated films out there. It's storytelling at its greatest. I heard great things about this sequel and I decided to check it out. I didn't expect it to live up to the original, because I knew it wouldn't. However, it's still a really worthy successor, and here's why.

The animation is breathtaking, especially for a direct-to-video film. It's actually feature film quality, the reason being that Disney had been casting out all of its animators in favour of computers. People who worked on films like Brother Bear suddenly found themselves working on DTV projects. ... Read More:

This film has everything you could want from a horror film: a cute cast (especially the lead), lots of errant machinery, dodgy flashlights, lightning, power failures, movement in the shadows, and glimpsed monsters, oh, and a very cute lead. There's even a full moon (well, nearly full). It doesn't break any new ground but it does succeed in achieving an effective sense of mounting dread. The performances from the mostly unknown (and did I mention cute?) cast are good, and the filming and effects are polished; particularly the monsters, which move in a wonderfully creepy way. It even manages a neat and satisfying ending. Although in the grand scheme of all things cinematic this film only warrants three stars in the world of horror flicks it easily deserves ... Read More:

I think that in its heart of hearts, "Weeds" wants to be a black comedy. After all, when her husband drops dead, Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker) decides to support her family, which consists of her two sons, Silas (Hunter Parrish) and Shane (Alexander Gould), by selling marijuana in suburbia.
