I have never been a fan of "Gilbert and Sullivan" or Opera in general. This opinion was through ignorance more than any matter of taste. However that is now all changed from watching this hugely enjoyable film based on the partnershiop of Gilbert and Sullivan in producing "The Mikado". The film is wonderfully acted and produced with special mention to Jim Broadbent (Gilbert) and the excellent Martin Savage (who plays George Grossmith).

For my own perspective, this is a suprisingly enjoyable movie. I have now watched it multiple times and I have yet to get bored with it. An excellent movie.

I wish I could praise this film, I really do. The historical events that lie behind it deserve more talent than those who made it seem to possess. Major flaws weaken what might have been a great film.

First, probably in an effort to `improve' the story, they muddle the history. There was a teenaged girl who did miraculously survive the gas chambers at Auschwitz, but that was at a different time and her fate was not that portrayed in the film. Bringing her into a revolt by the inmates who ran Nazism's machinery of death merely confuses the plot. Will she be saved or will the plot to destroy the crematoria succeed? The writers and directors never settle on which they want to portray, and the result is a mess.

Second, those who made this ... Read More:

This 2001 film from British director Sandra Goldbacher is a coming-of-age story about intense female teenage bonds and what happens to them on the road to adulthood. Marina (a splendid Anna Friel) and Holly (Michelle Williams) are in young years already fervently loyal best friends who live next door to each other. Perhaps as a reaction to this over-intensity and partly due to different parental backgrounds, their personalities develop into near opposites: Marina is a self-consciously wild party-girl and eclectic dresser who dabbles with heroin and casual sex, whilst Holly is a Sylvia Plath reading intellectual, a steadier, introverted being who feels mousy and unsexy (her domineering mother is shown telling her "There are pretty people, and there are clever people," as ... This is a gorgous dramatisation of a great book, something to watch again and again.
I taped this when the BBC broadcasted it, fully prepared to buy it as soon as the region 2DVD was released. I'm still waiting for that to happen. It's a complete mystery to me why it has to take so long.
So for now I just keep hoping my old VHS tapes won't degenerate too fast.

This is a great movie. It's not without it's flaws however, for a start they dramatize things a bit and make Marilyn look like a nutter with split personalites in places - which has no evidence of truth to back it up. However this does make for some great viewing, the final scene in the bathroom where Norma Jeane tells Marilyn in the mirror that she has 'lost her mind' is especially emotional and gives you an insight into perhaps Monroe's last hours with us.

More could have been done with the film in exhibiting some of Marilyn's more iconic images, the diamonds are a girls best friend iconic image and her most famous image in the white dress that blows up over the subway gate are given little screen time. Judd captures the essence of Marilyn far more than Sorvino, despite not ... Read More:

DVD : The Last Detective: Series 2 [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

The Last Detective: Series 2 [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Peter Davison, Sean Hughes, Rob Spendlove, Emma Amos, Charles De'Ath
directed by: David Tucker, Ferdinand Fairfax, Gavin Millar, Moira Armstrong
October 31, 2006

The last detective is Detective Constable Davies --"Dangerous" Davies to his coworkers. He's the least likely cop to find himself in a dangerous situation, or so they think, and his boss has said that Davies is the last detective he'd ever assign to an important case. Davies (Peter Davison) may be a bit of a plodder, may be too nice for his own good, but he's also thorough, conscientious and firmly committed to find the bad guys wherever the search takes him. In The Last Detective series, Davies' cases always start out being mundane and, on the surface, uncomplicated. But Dangerous Davies has a habit of uncovering hidden motives, long-ago murders, ruthless ambitions and, just about as often, victims who have no other resource than Davies' commitment to justice.

So far, so good. ... Read More:

I thought this was a really lovely and absorbing film. It very much captures what it is to be young and cute and get involved with older successful men (and I don't mean for rent). The scenes shot in Barcelona really evoke the city and the feel of a young American boy and his mum there as tourists - reminded me a bit of "Room With a View" as they went round with Paul being "tour guide" for his mum. Then the romantic secret relationship that develops with the older, successful concert pianist Paul Rhys. The film tends to suggest that young Paul is "used" when in fact he is probably - certainly later - enjoying the benefits of "the good life" and probably a "user" himself (if one can really call it that). I could really identify with the character and see so much I recognised - most "gay" films ... Read More:
