As a massive Jane Austen and period drama fan I was looking forward to viewing this film of Persuasion. Being the only Austen novel I have not read but being fully aware of the storyline I was quite eager to see how this version compared to the supposedly weaker 2007 version. I am sorry to say I was bitterly disappointed.
Despite a brilliant storyline to work with the writers seem to have dumbed down the story to a level of extreme monotony. There are a few witty one-liners and comic moments, that do serve to keep the viewer mildly interested but for the most part this film is lenghthy and dull, taking an alarming amount of time to take off and the end result is not exactly satisfactory either, being too rushed with a very rushed ... Am I really the only member of the general public who can see Rob Brydon for what he really is? (i.e. the poor man's Steve Coogan - just as Keith Barrett is the poor man's Alan Partridge). I mean, come on, the man can’t even have his ideas - he has to copy!
I mean sure, during a 30 minute episode of any show featuring Brydon I'll manage to force out a laugh or two (if I'm very lucky & feeling generous! - hence the second star), but basically he just isn’t funny.
It’s a real shame that Steve Coogan is doing very little television these days, especially when he’s being replaced with non-entities like Rob Brydon. These are really sad, sorry days for British television when this tripe ... Read More:

It's beautifully photographed, just beautifully. With the utmost care the director manages, not only to capture the intense colour of the scenes and scenery but also through great technical skill, and patient staging of the shot, to pass the viewer from what the painter is seeing in real life to a finished work that has come down to us. One moment you are shown the dramatic crashing of waves against the cliffs ... Read More:

Whilst I thought this film started promisingly, it was utterly ruined as soon as the adult Jane (Charlotte Gainsbourg)entered on the scene. Not only could she not act; making the story flat and uninteresting; but she had no 'presence' whatsoever; there was no sense of anything going on beneath the surface; so it was inconceivable that Rochester would even have noticed her I am afraid I did not even make it to the end of the film; it was so passionless and I could not believe in the relationship at all. Don't waste your money!

This is a gorgous dramatisation of a great book, something to watch again and again.
I taped this when the BBC broadcasted it, fully prepared to buy it as soon as the region 2DVD was released. I'm still waiting for that to happen. It's a complete mystery to me why it has to take so long.
So for now I just keep hoping my old VHS tapes won't degenerate too fast.

The item was sent to us as agreed, by the date agreed, but due to problems with the post he very kindly gave us a full refund without being asked to do so. When I let him know that we had finally received the item (entirely as described) some three weeks later, he said that we could keep it with his compliments.
A seller of some rare quality and our very grateful thanks go to him.
