I watched this with my two teenage daughters and husband we all really enjoyed it. Just totally different form most kid/teenage films. My advice is to not read any review who gives away the plot because it will just ruin the film. (Box of tissues a must). >>More Details

I grew up watching the original film so I expected not to like this version as much but I actually prefer it. It's a lot darker than the original film and I found it very amusing. I wasn't so impressed with all the added parts about Willy Wonka's father but apart from that it was all good. I think it's one of those films that's just as good for adults as it is for children. My horror/thriller loving cousin and I settled down to watch this film with keen expectations. What a disappointing film. I expected the plagues to be affecting huge expanses of America, not just the immediate vicinity! This film had the potential to be an almost disaster movie of Biblical proportions if the plagues featured were made to affect a more widespread area. I think that and the lucicrous lack of scientific involvement in such phenomina occuring let it down. There could have been so much more scale and thrill to it! To be honest I cannot imagine pictures looking any better, the clarity is amazing. The extras are so so, nothing that will get anyone majorly excited. As for the film, I was disapointed, it had been advertised as a childrens fantasy a la harry potter. Not so, in fact apart from a few moments when the childrens imaginations are visualized on screen there is scarcely any fantasy elements. That aside it is still a pretty good movie, it just wasn't what I expected. If I were to liken it to any other movie it would have to be my girl. 'The Reaping' is about a woman named Katherine (Hilary Swank) who used to be a Christian missionary until the deaths of her husband and young daughter which made her lose her faith. She then began to look into weird religious phenomenon and revealing the scientific causes of them and proving that they are nothing to do with religion. She then gets called to investigate a small town called Haven which has been struck by ten biblical plagues. I was really looking forward to this as I quite enjoy horror films with religious undertones such as The Exorcist, The Omen and The Exorcism of Emily Rose but this film was just too ridiculous and too "Hollywood" for my liking. However this time she has tough questions to answer. Enjoyed the ending too. Actors do a great job too. Surprised that I did not hear about this movie before. Only bought it as HD DVD's were going very cheap at present. I would have given it 4.5 or 5 stars for enjoyment, but gave 4 stars as there are other movies and classics like some academy winning movies, and this is a comparative rating. Basic story of outcast sixth graders bonding, learning and teaching what life is about. The Disney's and Director: Gabor Csupo's version is trying to be more than the book and came up with an artsy film that is better than most of the trash that we feed our kids today. The only problem is that the professional artsy people can do it better and the people that go for mindless graphics and fairy tail endings will not appreciate this film; it is sort of pearls before swine. Trying to be subtle, we get nether graphics enough to make this a moppet movie or the lack of graphic making this a philological escapist story.
