Troop Beverly Hills [1989] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Shelley Long, Craig T. Nelson, Betty Thomas, Mary Gross, Stephanie Beacham
directed by: Jeff Kanew

This film is hilarious. Even my boyfriend will grudgingly admit it. I grew up from the age of 11 with this film, probably watching it once every couple of months. This is a tradition that my sister and I still carry on. It just gets better with age!

80s fans will probably recognize many of the young troopers (from Jenny Lewis to Kelli Martin to Tori Spelling), and I'm sure pre-teen girls are sure to like the movie for it's silly story, young female cast, and the hilarious antics of Shelly Long. It's a great little movie, appeals to all age groups and has some genuinely amusing lines, which I often find myself subconsciously quoting. Talking of quotes, here's a funny one:

Jean Claude Van Damme plays a fireman who's lost his nerve as well as the respect of his young son. But that's soon about to change when terrorists take over an ice hockey stadium and the Vice President's box. On hand is Van Damme who is determined to save his family and foil the terrorists' plans, which include blowing up the stadium during the match.

Van Damme is likeable as always and Powers Boothe lends some charisma as the chief villian. He's no Alan Rickman, but his presence definately aids the movie. But the aspect that really raises this effort is the action. It's virtually non-stop and nicely varied, despite being in one location. Whether he's fighting a giant penguin (it'll make sense when you see it!), swinging from the ... Read More:

Desert Hearts [1985] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Helen Shaver, Patricia Charbonneau, Audra Lindley, Andra Akers, Dean Butler
directed by: Donna Deitch

It isn't hard to see why this is a classic amongst lesbians the world over. One of the first (if not the first?) to have a relatively happy ending for the couple and show a love scene between two women.
The story is passionate and realistic in the emotions of fear, longing, love and confusion that are felt by Cay and Vivian. Beautifully filmed with one of the best soundtracks ever - if you like (old) country music!
I can't sing enough praises and I've already watched it about 3/4times in the space of a couple of weeks.
