It will stand the test of time as amongst the finest situation comedy released by the BBc.
The last episode made now over 31 years ago see the story devised by Jimmy Perry and David Croft about a group of aged Civil Defence Home Guard in a fictional seaside town on the Sussex coast of Walmington on Sea.
Great Shakesperian actor Frank Laurie surprisingly accepted the role of Private Fraser at the grand old age of 73.He with prabably John le Mesurer were famous actors and big stars in their own right when Ian lavander fresh out of acting school was cast as Private Pike who really was David Croft in all but name.
Arthur Lowe the pompous bank manager made Capt Mainwaring a hosehold name.
I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set.
This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are simply wrong for a lead Austen part.
For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price.

I was nearly put off buying this film as it seems that some of the reviewers don't think it quite as good as the series. However, I have now bought it and think it is brilliantly made, very funny and a wonderful film to put by for a quiet moment during the Christmas holidays when the TV listings are disappointing or for a rainy Sunday afternoon. My children love it, my parents love it, we love it - so nice to be able to sit down to a film together as a family.
Unlike the series which is set solely in Britain parts of this film are of the Germans plotting their invasion from the other side of the Channel. The juxtapositioning of the German preparedness and the British unpreparedness is priceless. You will recognise some plots ... Read More:

So this is how one of the greatest British comedy programs of all time started. Going right back to the very beginnings, this DVD features the complete first series and the remaining parts from series two of Dad's Army, a comedy drama based around the time of World War Two. Staring the brilliant Arthur Lowe (Captain Mainwaring), Dad's Army follows the formation and the workings of the Home Guard at Walmington-On-Sea. Naturally I doubt anymore has to be said about what Dad's Army was about, unless you've spend your entire live under a rock, the chances are you'll know. Despite the fact that in the first two seasons, the actors were somewhat inexperienced, the episodes a bit inconsistent and of course being in black & white, Dad's Army still offers plenty ... Along with Fawlty Towers, Dads Army is the finest TV comedy of any type made in the 1970's. But not even Fawlty Towers could not match Dads Army in the way it ridiculed the British class system, with the unsurpassed performances of Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier.
These two are the key to the series greatness. Watching the first of the christmas specials again last night it was the scenes with these two that held my attention and made me laugh a lot the most. Mainwaring is pompous and a deserate social climber, whereas Wilson is laid-back and as is shown in one episode (not on this DVD) has upper-class links. However lets not get carried away. The show is one of the best comedies ever made because of the entire main cast, all of whom add something ... Read More:

The very best of Dad's army is a specktacular DVD! Its the best Dad's army DVD/video available, and is truly amazing! It has all five brilliant classic episodes such as the Deadly attachment, asleep in the deep, sons of the sea etc. Some of these episdoes are my favourites, and they are defiently the best! I think the best episode is either the deadly attachment or asleep in the deep, my favourite is Asleep in the deep. The only episode I didn't like is never too old (the last ever episode)! i think it could of been a lot better, but it was still good! My favourite parts are when the platoon are trapped in the flooding room (asleep in the deep), or when the platton are hi-jacked by the Germans (the deadly attachment). So overall, all the ... Dad's Army The Complete Third Series was produced and directed by David Croft. The episodes in this series were originally transmitted between 11/09/69 and 11/12/69. This DVD contains all fourteen episodes spread over two disks. Some special features are included, in the form of an interesting interview with Arnold Ridley, and a Photo Gallery.
The shows followed the Walmington-On-Sea Home Guard (founded and commanded by Captain Mainwaring). The small band of men, which include an undertaker, a butcher, a bank manager, and a conscientious objector, act as the front line of defence in their town against an enemy invasion. But above all else Dad's Army was a comedy, so the men often find themselves in self inflicted (but humorous) situations.
