DVD : Treasure Island [1950]

Treasure Island [1950]

starring: Bobby Driscoll, Robert Newton, Basil Sydney, Walter Fitzgerald, Denis O'Dea
directed by: Byron Haskin
February 12, 2001

I was given this book when about 5. I read it. And, it has always remained a wonderful tale . To be re-read when modern authors pall. Then, again, I found the film. It is easily forgotten that Robert Newton was a Shakesperian actor and not merely a "pirate", yet he is now the archetype of the "pirate". I now enjoy the film as much as the book. O.K., what if everything appears dated? It must do, this film was made when I was 2/3 but I can still enjoy it 60 years later - as I do the book. It still remains the most accurate representation of Stevenson's masterpiece to have been made. SO FAR.

with the amazing animation and the trademark singalongs you know this is a disney film what can you say when the people at disney pump out great film after great film? well for me this film doesnt quite deserve the prestigus 5 star mark purley because i thought that the story seemed very very rushed but apart from that the characters are great physically and vocually (espseacially mr smee)and the constantly present "disney magic" is there so i am not complaining (that much) definatly worth a look young or old

We see an old scrapbook as the narrator recalls that the summer of 1903 was a special one for him and is still dear to his heart. Then the story begins and we meet young Jerry who lives on the farm with his tough but loving Granny. A newborn black lamb has been rejected by its mother and Jerry convinces Granny to let him raise it, against her better judgment. And even though Danny the lamb is a lot of trouble, Jerry still dreams of taking Danny to the County Fair.

This Disney tale of childhood innocence is very simple; there are no tragedies on the road to a happy ending, just an amazingly cute little boy and his ornery lamb. As Jerry, Bobby Driscoll didn't have to do anything for me to fall in love with him (although he's a very good actor!); ... Read More:
