Ok i'll admit, i didn't watch this when it aired on TV - had all intentions of doing so though, but just never did.
God did i miss out, i seen the end of an episode from season 2 on E4 the other day - i was glued. Obviously didn't know who was who and what was what but it was great from the 10 mins i did see.
I already like Calista Flockhart from Ally McBeal (One of my favourite US series EVER - Brothers and Sisters now being next on the list) and i also liked Sally Field from Mrs. Doubtfire and E.R and she plays a fantastic part as Nora - for what i have seen, i only bought it the other day.
I have watched some more and i am hooked, it is realistic, genuine, funny, and dramatic - all in all GREAT!

Where to start in reviewing this truly fabulous film? A clever plot, a script full of laughs (with the odd poignant moment thrown in), and a top notch cast, this movie has it all. Robin Williams is a revelation as the gay nightclub owner and Nathan Lane is at his outrageously camp best as his partner - and frighteningly convincing in drag too! Gene Hackman delivers a terrific performance as the ultra Conservative senator a wonderful double act with his wife played by the superb Dianne Wiest. Look out for a young Calista Flockhart as their daughter, in her pre Ali MacBeal days. Hank Azaria is hilarious as the over the top manservant - and later, disastrous butler. The embarrassment factor is high and you'll be watching through your hands as the ... Read More:

How can I communicate the aberration that this represents?
I hope that a number of you will be repelled simply to hear that the roles of Hermia and Helena are taken (and then forgotten about) by those mascots of "Pretty but Pointless", Calista Flockhart and Anna Friel. Calista Flockhart rides a Penny Farthing bicycle and blows the tumbling tendrils of hair off her forehead regularly - but it gets worse, even when the talent gets more accomplished.
Stanley Tucci would get laughed off a senior school stage for the way that he tries to invest Puck with thoughtfulness and fun: Jimmie Krankee would have done a better job. Rupert Everett's Oberon is reminescent of a Studio 54 Go-Go dancer murmuring something he has a distant memory of, and Kevin Kline's ... Read More:

I completley agree with another reviewer..you have to be a little bit mad to actually enjoy Ally to the full.
Make no bones, this isn't no Friends, no Sex in The City, nowhere near a 'girly series'. This is an incredible and mindblowing, and possibly life-changing series that is so well written its almost impossible to comprehend the intelligence of the writer.
Ally will make you cry, male or female, because it gets through all your barriers and certain episodes just hit raw nerves that seem so well protected. The comedy is not canned laughter, its sublime, and was never really intended to be a 'laugh a minute series', its a lot more serious than that.
All of the characters are fantastic in their own right but Ally and John Cage steal the show ... Read More:

this season has so much more drama then the first season. it was sooooo funny at so many levels. this series made me cry and laugh at the same time. if you liked the first season theres no doubt about it that you are going to love this one. there's two weddings, one divorce, birthday party and lots of romance. this reminds me of my family a lot of chaos but fun. the last episode has a great twist to it but cant say that i didnt see it coming because brothers and sisters always has great twists and turn. cant wait for the third season to be aired.

The two star rating might seem a bit harsh, but for me, this is not a patch on the previous seasons. During the first two this was one of the best shows on TV: innovative, funny, moving; and the third just about made the grade. However, by the fourth season a lot of the original characters have started to move on and the show just doesn't have the same spark about it.
One of the positives is the introduction of Larry (Robert Downey Jr.), he's a really appealing male character something which I always found to be a bit thin on the ground in Ally McBeal, however due to the actor's personal problems his character was brought in and out of the show in a way that really messed with the narrative. Apart from this the new characters brought in just weren't ... Read More:

Season 3 was great! With Elaine wanting to be a mom, Ally taking prozac, John SPANKING Nelle its all hilarious, but there is the tragedy of Billy's brain tumour! Ally, though, gets more annoying (if possible!) and personally, Larry made her a little more supportable. Nelle gets more subzero and Ling gets colder and John becomes stranger. But, Elaine, my favorite character gets better and you see a good side of her in Blue Christmas and Just Friends. I recommend Seeing Green (Ally takes Prozac), Blue Christmas (Elaine wants to adopt a baby), Just Friends (Ally thinks Johns the one and Elaine is tired of her image), The Oddball Parade (Elaine and Ally audition for a contest to be Tina Turners back up singer), Boy Next Door (Billy, sadly dies), Hope and Glory (Nelle gets ... Very watchable especially for Ally McBeal fans of the series. Better than the soap operas we now have on TV - the characters are fresher, cleaner and more inspiring than the gloomy cast of down and outs in English 'soaps'. A few later episodes in this series become boring with added excessive shouting/arguing which spoils the style of 'Ally McBeal'. This multiple CD set prepares one for the next season of quirky characters who compliment each other well in the serious setting of a law firm, with occasional (surreal) flights of fancy.

The first 4 seasons of Ally Mcbeal were amazing. Sharp, witty, offbeat. Season 5 is dire. I wanted the whole series so I bought it. What's wrong with it? Well Mark, Jackson and Renee vanish without an explanation. Renee is Ally's best friend you think she would mention her! The addition of Dame Edna Everage is stupid the character is so irritating its untrue I can't bear to watch her scenes. This is indicative of the producers need to add "stars" to prop up this ailing show, [as it was then] Larry is also missed severely. The further addition of Jenny and Glen simply doesn't work. Their story lines are banal and pointless, their characters are too young and don't fit in at all. Cage is missing for a lot of the season and Ally finds a daughter, Ridiculous! What's right ...
