This is the best film I've seen this year. I don't usually rate Colin Farrell but he's really good at this. If you like a bit of black comedy then you'll love this.

I'm bemused by the tendency to assert that this film is a veiled Vietnam film, "ostensibly" about another war, as this Amazon review puts it. It IS about another war, one that was far more important to the nation where it was written and filmed, and in which the father of writer and director Charles Chilton was killed. Anyway, I watched it as a First World War film, and that is how it has always seemed to me: it comments on all other wars, implicitly, of course.
It's silly to compare or measure this against most other war films, because it is so unlike any other, but it stands out as a dramatic, cinematic, narrative gem. A serious musical about the horrors of war: sounds as likely as a serious musical about living in Nazi Germany. Oh, wait...someone ... Read More:

what a wasted opportunity. what a waste of money. what a waste of Angie jolie in gorgeous ancient greek attire with the snakes and all.
Begin at the end. Good idea Olie ! not. Tell the story in a series of flashbacks. Dead clever, Dead literary, dead movie results.
Don't let's start on the irish accents. Bad idea. Twittering leprechaun Alexander the midget wit de mophead trying to be DEEP at the end of every scene. I wouldn't follow this demigod to the village pub never mind accross THE KNOWN WORLD.
No No this is not a sword and sandal greek tragedy more a hollywood flip flop on a gigantic scale.
Two characters really. Him and his mum, mum and him. The rest as portable scenery, who cares. No narrative drive, no convincing emotional dynamo ... Read More:

This silly movie involves far too much dialogue and characters that for me seemed like cardboard cutouts as opposed to real people. The talking is nonstop and repeats the same things over and over and over again. This doesn't yield insight, it merely makes the clock continue ticking for a lengthier film. Also, the fact that two brothers raised together could have such differing viewpoints on life and guilt rang false with me.
Worst of all was I never found myself caring for either of these brothers. One seemed a ruthless enough that he thought only of himself. To feel no sympathy for either made this film more an endurance than a pleasure to watch.
In Woody Allen's film STARDUST MEMORIES he had aliens show up on Earth wanting to speak with his ... Read More:

This is perfect example of how to do an intelligent thriller - keep it simple. Find a simple plot device to hook your attention, and then let the characters drive the plot. In this case, it is literally one plot device, and one character - virtually everyone else is superfluous. There is a real beauty in this almost minimal simplicity.
The plot device is an absolute gem. Farrell is well cast as an arrogant, ambitious publicist, smart and hip, full of his own BS, a liar, who takes people for granted. In short, he is a deeply unlikeable person. He makes a phone call to a girl on a public payphone so his wife can't trace the number on his mobile. When he finishes the call, the phone rings, and he picks up. The voice on the end of the phone (Keifer Sutherland) tells ... Read More:

It would appear that this film has attracted a lot more controversy than it is worth. Spy movies are a favorite of mine and I found this one typical of the genre. The spy game is based on trust, deception and ultimately betrayal and this offering certainly didn`t disappoint in that respect. It was, perhaps for some, a touch slow in parts but that only gave the viewer time to catch up. Definitely a film to watch more than once so you can unravel the plot with hindsight.

Tim Roth's debut film as director is a claustrophobic family drama with an excellent cast and is memorably filmed around locations in Devon.
I came to this film knowing that the content of the plot (centering around a father abusing his teenage daughter) would mean it was likely to be a harrowing watch, and I was not wrong in that assumption. Ray Winstone and Tilda Swinton make a convincing if strange married couple, and the two young actors playing their children are revelations in their roles. The film is photographed brilliantly and scenes shot on the rugged coastline are excellent contrasts to the dark interiors. Ultimately, I am not sure whether anyone would come away from this film feeling uplifted in any way, but it does contain moments of raw drama which are worth seeing.

Stunning film making from Michael Mann. I have discussed with others and this film is going to be one you love or hate - I was the only one in 5 people or so who loved it so be wary.
The film opens in a deliberately disorientating fashion - it initially appears to be showing us a police exercise in a night club but almost immediately pulls us out as an informant telephones Crockett & Tubbs to report the trouble he is in. This draws the two into a drugs tale that is told through visuals and whilst complex and stimulating is not complicated. Hence my confusion at the viewers moaning that they did not understand it and who want everything laid out on a plate for them and presumably to switch their brains off when watching a film. If you want to be challenged get this and enjoy, otherwise ... Read More:
