I wish I hadn't watched this. I kept on because I just hoped it could deliver if I persevered but it just didn't bring out the light in contrast to the dark enough. Pessimistic and very nearly totally unrelentingly dark sided. It would have been great to have some more sincere characters to contrast with the downfall of the cynical protagonist.

This is my favourite adaptation of a Forster novel and it has thankfully been re-released as a proper widescreen version which fills the full screen of my TV. (The original DVD was a failed experiment in adaptation resulting in a shrunken picture in which very little was visible whatever TV shape you were using). Despite being rooted in the uptight Edwardian social rectitude of 1908, the novel still has plenty to say about the present day. At the time Edward Morgan Forster was firmly cowering at the back of the closet and channelling his hidden homosexuality into a critique of his time. People behave as they think they should behave. This will be a review of the film and not the extras on this two disc edition which are frankly disappointing.Also,if this was a review about the DVD casing it would probably get one star.Flimsy,made of cardboard and mine already has a tear in it!
Still,the movie itself is excellent.It does seem to divide opinion with amost as many people awarding it one star as opposed to five.But for me it is worth full marks because the performance of Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic.He is at times manic,almost sympathetic and nearly comic but it is rivetting and one of the finest performances of recent years.The character of Daniel Plainview could have very easily descended into farce,but Day-Lewis keeps things in check right to the very end.I suppose that the ... This is an amazing film, with very high acting skill from Day Lewis. The acting skill of this is just under a Robert De Niro performance, I compare every actor to De Niro as he is the greatest actor of all time!
Daniel gets a 5 out of 5 for his acting, but the story of this film is not great, that is why for me it hits a 3 out of 5. There were 2 films of 2008 that were the best and that's "There will be blood" & "No country for old men" so if you are looking to get one of these in Blu ray and can't decide, then I would recommend "No country for old men". That film gets 5 out of 5 for me as the acting is amazing with an amazing story line. But if you can get both that's even better, that's what i've done. Final note "There will be blood" ... have seen this film more than a dozen times and it never stops to amaze me.. the perfect film combination of a history lesson, action/adventure, suspence and romance, cant believe that the oscars of its year missed it.. many great characters with most given relative depth, and a daniel day-lewis perfectly casted, establishing himself after winning the oscar for my left foot and showing of what is to come from him: in the name of.., gangs of ny, the crucible, there will be blood more recently.
A superb multi-layered story, hard and bloody at times but also soft and romantic.. one of the best music scores ever on film (!), visually stunning with breathtaking picture and cinematography, one of these films that makes u think "thats what cinema is all about".. heroic, ... Honestly, I cannot figure out this movie. There is undoubtedly the will to tell about some aspects of N.Y. history, but this is no historical movie. It is neither an action movie (despite the abundant blood and violence), nor a romance.
Characters are played a bit too cartoon-type, the script is not really stricking. With all respect for Martin Scorsece and the effort placed to make this movie(reason for which I rate it 2 stars and not 1 star), if one has to wash the car, one better spend his time that way. >>More Details |

I am rating this movie three stars as the result of some complicated mathematics, of which the detail is as follows:
- basically, this is a ONE star movie. Why? Because in this movie virtually NOTHING happens! And this is a REEEAAAAALLLLYYYYY long one - 132 minutes is not a small thing to swallow, believe me, I know! Now, this kind of movie can be very dangerous. The first time I went to see it, I was with a date. Now, this date was to become later my fiance, then my bride, my life companion and ultimately the mother of my children. All of which almost didn't happen, because of this movie! Even now, after all this time, my wife reminds me "The Age of Innocence" disaster if she wants to put me down.
