Deja vu is a good watch spoiled a bit by it's dodgy execution. I came away feeling I'd watched two short films both with Denzel Washington in them that had been stuck together to make one feature. The plot revolves around Washington's character Doug Carlin investigating a bombing on a ferry in New Orleans. One of the bodies that washes up is that of beautiful young woman who is missing four fingers (this is important later) but it turns out couldn't have been a victim of the ferry blast istself as forensic evidence points to her death being some two hours before. I found the first 55 minutes a touch slow at times, but from there on I was glued to the film, based on the true story of Frank Lucas a drug lord in New York. Russell Crowe in particular is as usual in fine form, with a good performance from Denzel Washington too. I've been looking forwards to watching this film since I first heard about it and for me it does not disappoint, I've read on another review stating that the story is preditable, but this is after all a true story, how else are you supposed to portray a true story?, putting things in that did not happen?, after all with a film like this there's really only 2 or 3 ways that this could ever turn out anyway!! well i bought this dvd a week ago on the review of 14 people against 1,i can honestly say that this film was excellent! I watched it and wanted more, its a long time since i've seen something as good and enjoyed it as much as i have done this evening. i'm no big american football fan in fact i hav'nt got a clue about the game or even the rules .........but you don't need to know to watch this film. great acting, brilliant film what more can i say... without spoiling the story. I've always loved this film, I had it on tape for years. It's a great story, intelligent, with superb acting. Other reviews say it all What did annoy me was that the DVD is two-sided. You have to watch half the film, then turn the DVD over to watch the other half. This isn't going to be enough to irritate everybody but it really irrited me, and I really wouldn't have bought it if I'd known about the format. I'm the lazy type who likes to settle down, surrounded by food, and not get up again until the film is finished and there's no food left. A rousing story about a black platoon facing prejudice and annilation during the American civil war. Matthew Broderick's finest performance as the leader of the first all black regiment fighting the confederates and racism from their own Union army. Supported by the fine Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The plight of these brave men will emotionally move you, possibly to tears, although mine was more of a controlled welling, though my lower lip did quiver when the credits rolled. >>More Details

Why did I not hear about this film when it was out on cinema? AT LAST......some original scripts. One of the cleverest films I have seen in a long time, and is mentally stimulating. If you like "shoot em up's" avoid it. If you want a quality original film, snap Amazon's hand off at it's current price. UNDERVALUED. What I like, is quality films lose their value quickly (suits ME) and rubbish "shoot em up's" hold their price better. If you want the latter, buy a Playstation. >>More Details

I watched American Gangster for the first time on Sky the other day and have to say it is a great film and a pleasure to watch. I've just ordered the blu ray. It's a slow burner and not the most action packed, but that isn't always a bad thing as this film proves. Based on the true story of Frank Lucas and his rise to power and Richie Roberts and his relentless quest to bring Lucas to justice. The acting is great as you would expect from such a cast and New York and New Jersey look great going back to the 70's. There is some great books and documentaries on Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes (this guy should have film about his life also) so check them out. All in all a 5 star film. >>More Details

I am inspired by the story of Malcolm X. Here is a man that did make a difference. He is a true example of bravery. His story is well told by Spike Lee. Its strange why Alex Haley (the author of Malcolm's autobiography of which the film is based) does not appear in the film at all given the close working relationship between Malcolm and the author so near the end of his life. Regretably the UK released version of the film has no real extras. A commentary and a few good documentaries on the man would help. However the whole film is good from start to finish and does well to show the development of Malcolm from troubled youth to national champion.
