Pinocchio : Special Edition [1940]

starring: Marion Darlington, Cliff Edwards, Walter Catlett, Don Brodie, Charles Judels
directed by: Hamilton Luske, Ben Sharpsteen
March 03, 2003

now it may be a classic, but i'm afraid i was really disappointed with this film. my 5 yr old was frankly bored watching this, it was very slow to get moving. the story line was not what i was expecting. the jimmney cricket / conscience was to abstract for him to understand in the way it was presented. and there was a terrible bit later on with pinnochio getting drunk and smoking cigars. that bit raised a few tricky questions.

what i had expected the main story line to be - pinnochio's nose growing long when he lied, occured only once for about 20 seconds in the middle of the film and never again.

we will not be watching this one again
sadly not enjoyable or educational

DVD : Stella Dallas [1937] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Stella Dallas [1937] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

starring: Barbara Stanwyck, John Boles, Anne Shirley, Barbara O'Neil, Alan Hale
directed by: King Vidor
March 08, 2005

Stella Dallas is a sad tale of a woman who wishes to get on in life but her working class background holds her back. However, the love she has for her only daughter is unrelenting until she finally realises the child will be best with the father. This is a heartbreaking moment and any mother will find it hard to hold back the tears.

I love this movie and cry from beginning to end!

Barbara Stanwyck is truly wonderful as the brash, no style, Stella!

DVD : The Outlaw [1943]

The Outlaw [1943]

starring: Jack Buetel, Thomas Mitchell, Jane Russell, Walter Huston, Mimi Aguglia
directed by: Howard Hawks, Howard Hughes
April 21, 2003

This DVD is nothing but a disappointment. Neither the script nor the direction nor the picture quality are in the least satisfying.Strange enough - but I expected much more after the reviews I had read.Walter Huston's performance as Doc Holliday is outstanding and so is Thomas Mitchell as Pat Garrett. Jane Russell is just a doll and in my opinion not even really sexy. Jack Beutel's part as Billy The Kid is on the average. Another nuisance is the picture quality, which comes along as if it was a copy from a VHS tape. Victor Young's musical score is certainly noteable, but must is roll on continuously from the very beginning til the very end of the picture? 2 stars thanks to Huston and Mitchell!

My dad recommended this dvd to me, I wasn't sure but when I saw it I was a fan straight away. I only wish they would do a box set! The stories are exciting and both stars do there own stunts. This is a must see!
