With the two modern entries in the Hulk franchise viewers will largely fall into 3 categories - 1) people who prefer this Ed Norton vehicle to Ang Lee's 2003 Hulk because the latter was "too arty" whereas this is more of an action movie; 2) people who prefer the Ed Norton/Louis Leterrier project because it is closer in style to the 1970s Lou Ferrigno TV series; 3) people who prefer the Ang Lee experiment because it drew its influence more from the paper source material and generally felt like a more-rounded movie.
I fall firmly into the third category, although I came into The Incredible Hulk (2008) without any predefined opinions, simply hoping that it would live up to the first film. I was aware that Marvel had decided to distance ... Read More:

When I sat down to watch this movie, I had no real expectations as the last Hulk movie was very poor, however with the recent spate of excellent Marvel films I was keeping my fingers crossed. Firstly I must say this was a huge improvement from the movie a few years back. The CGI was a lot less obvious and the movie had a much fuller story. Nice cameo from Lou Ferrigno as the security guard and of course Stan Lee. Looked good on Blu Ray, however not as much for me as Iron Man. Major downside for me was Liv Tyler, just didn't find her at all convincing.... to girly, breathless and pouting for a top scientist. I have to admit that I have not had the same issues on the Blu ray as some of the others here. Summary is good movie, just not quite up there with ... Read More:

For some reason this film bypassed me on its first release, but eventually I caught up with it at the cinema and on dvd. If you like intelligent, beautifully acted literary adaptations, if you like beautiful scenery, and if you like real emotional content in your films, I heartily recommend The Painted Veil.
It's set in China during the rise of the Nationalist movement (1920s), and really benefits from actually being filmed there. It revolves around the relationship of a married couple Walter and Kitty Fane - brilliantly portrayed by Edward Norton and Naomi Watts.
Kitty marries Walter to escape from her mother, despite not being in love with him. They begin married life in Shanghai, where they are soon in the middle of the ex-pat British ... Read More:

The Illusionist is the most sumptuous recreation of the Austro-Hungarian empire I have ever seen on film (actually, its the only recreation of the Austro-Hungarian empire I can recall seeing on film) and as such takes place in the twilight age of European empires and hereditary dynasties, where science promised a brave new world, but magic and mystery still seemed possible.
Underneath all the pomp, circumstance and enormous twirling moustaches, however, the Illusionist is a an old fashioned love story. Will the poor but honourable Illusionist, Eisenheim (Edward Norton, an always watch-able actor) win his childhood sweetheart, The Duchess Sophie (Jessica Biel) from the evil bully Crown-Prince (Rufus Sewell)? What do you think? Did Titanic end with the evil rich ... Read More:

The thing which is perhaps most horrifying about this movie is that the majority of the racist points made by the main character ring true. His intelligence, or more correctly the intelligence of the writing, means he can articulate well and promote his opinion convincingly. He sells his perspective and it is easy to understand how youngsters, or those who are perhaps lost in the world could be taken in.
I've read criticism from one reviewer (Soru Takahashi) that the transition from the old bitter, hate-driven Derek to the new one is under developed and the younger brother is all too willing to accept the new Derek without question. I agree with this. However, I don't believe it detracts from the credibility of the movie as much as Soru suggests. Nonetheless I would say owing to this ... Read More:

This is an entertaining enough effort, but cashes in too strongly on The Silence of the Lambs. Hopkins is good as usual, and Edward Norton is particularly good, but the rest feels a little contrived. Not enough of this gels, and it doesn't have the same unsettling vibe as "Manhunter."
Still worth seeing for some good bits, though.

Even before I viewed this film I sensed that the representation of the reason for the Crusades would likely be distorted. My suspicions were proved correct right from the outset. The viewer is quickly led to believe that the Crusaders seized Jerusalem. In fact they had re-captured the city from Islamic conquest. As expected too, the Crusaders including the Christian religion are presented in a totally negative light. Saladin is portrayed as benevolent, magnanimous and religiously pure. Of course, the Crusading hero is neither religious or politically minded. His attitude enables him to misguidedly define the earthly Jerusalem as the 'kingdom of heaven' thus leaving the viewer with that impression too. Nowhere in the bible is the city described in this way.
These predictable, PC distortions aside, the ... Read More:
