Matilda was originally written as a children¡¦s novel by Roald Dahl (tales of the unexpected) in 1988. His wry wit and humour certainly makes the book an enjoyable read and this humour still shows in Danny DeVito¡¦s movie version of the novel with a contrast of both American and English actors.
The film is about a young girl called Matilda played wonderfully by Mara Wilson (Miss Doubtfire). Though at the time, Wilson was fairly new to the acting scene; her acting skills still comes across as charming.
Another great actor in the film is the director, Danny DeVito (Mars Attacks), who also plays both the narrator and Matilda¡¦s father. DeVito is both ... Read More:

I'd been wanting to see this film for ages but never got around to it, i bought it about a week and a half ago, looking at the reverse i was schoked at the fact that it was 3 hours long! I have a really short attention span, and it was also in black and white, which i thought would put me off. Usually i watch films and work through them or talk to friends nose around on teh computer etc but after watching about half an hour of this film i couldn't tear myself away, i completely neglected my laptop for the next two and a half hours! it didn't get boring at all and i didn't even notice it wasn't in black and white. All though we all know of the tragic events of the holocaust watching it unfold in front of you through spielberg's magic doesn't fail to ... The story of Bridget Jones first began as a diary collumn in a newspaper, rose to success in book form (then it's sequel) and then finally hit the movies in 2001 with Briget played quite perfectly by the lovely Renee Zellwegger.
This modern take on Pride and Predjudice follows the female protagonist Briget Jones who decides to keep a diary of her life; unlike the Mary-Jane all too perfect characters in most stories and movies of today, Bridget is quite literally EVERY woman you've ever known.
Bridget is a 30-something urban singleton on the look for love - perhaps in the wrong places. She's an ever so slightly overweight (Zellwegger put on weight specifically for the movie) office worker who reads self-help books religiously, and ... Read More:

Denzil Washington stars in this high class chiller in which he plays a cop trying to deal with an opponent who could literally be anybody at any time. A good cast including John Goodman and Donald Sutherland provide excellent support. Combine this with a surprisingly clever script and decent direction and you'll find a film that thrills and surprises in equal measures. No more so than the ending which has a lovely twist which I certainly didn't see coming.
Fortunately for us there is no basis in reality for this story. If there was you'd look at people a little bit differently in future. Its also worth mentioning that I shall never hear a certain Rolling Stones song in the same way again after watching this film.
I'd just finished reading Karin Slaughter's book of almost the same name when this dvd popped through my letterbox so I initially thought - obviously mistakenly - that some film producer was ahead of the game!
As a thriller the film works well but only because of Anthony Hopkins as the lead criminal (if proven guilty, of course) and the attempt by a young legal hotshot, Ryan Gosling, to do just that.
Frankly, this would have been a run-of-the-mill made-for-tv film but for these two. Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as an aircraft engineer turned wife-killer who is determined to beat the rap.
I puzzled throughout the film until the answer was revealed just what he had done with the gun he used to kill his wife. Except she didn't die ... Read More:

This has been my favorite film since it came out in 1999. As well as being one of the first dvds to hit the home screen it was also the first movie that captured my imagination.
It has my favorite actor in it -Robin Williams who manages to create a character that has many angles. he uses his brilliant performance to deliver a robot that can merely do more than house work but that can also plant a real question inside someone- what makes you different and what makes you human...

Thirteen Ghosts is a remake of a 1960's film of the same title created by the brilliant William Castle. The film follows a man and his children who become trapped in a ghost ridden house that they've inherited from Cyrus (the man's eccentric uncle.) Trapped along with them are a psychic, a lawyer, and a ghost hunter.
Thirteen Ghosts is a bit different from your standard horror, and it goes without saying that I doubt that this it's the kind of film that everyone will find scary. But for me at least it worked. As this is probably one of the greatest ghost films I've ever seen. The bathroom scene especially, which has been done really well comes to mind. Not to mention when the lawyer 'splits.' The plot is solid and progresses well, keeping you both scared ... Read More:

In telling Schindler's story the director chose black and white and the beginning intimates that it might be in the great tradition of 'The Third Man' etc. Unfortunately the film meanders astray into detailed descriptions of the holocaust and the dynamic of the film is lost. Instead of a tense 1 hour 50 minutes of cunning, guile and threat there are literal hours when almost everything is 'spelt out' in many long takes and diversions. The great film techniques of suggestion and inference are little used as almost every action is shown literally and dramatic movement is lost to history lesson. It seems to me important that the dramatic 'backdrop' of any artistic production has to be understood and accepted for the story using that scenario to be successful and not 'told' as the ... I know what you're thinking - this classic film starring Bruce Campbell has been released so many times already (and it has)... but whether you're a long-time fan or newcomer, it's worth getting this movie on Blu-Ray. Essentially, it's the HD-DVD version transferred to the Blu-Ray format, but what a difference HD makes - the quality of the picture is the best I've seen of this film. One thing worth mentioning, as it neglects to tell you under EXTRAS on the box cover: This Blu-Ray edition is the U.S. theatrical cut with the S-Mart ending - but the Director's Cut appears as an "extra" in standard definition. Incidentally, the DVD release (with the same box art and extras information) is the Director's Cut! All in all, worth £14 of anyone's money. Hail to the king baby!
