After renting this DVD following the good reviews on here, I just wanted to stop anyone else wasting an evening watching this utter tosh, as I did.
I watched to the bitter end in the vain hope it would eventually get better, and it doesn't. Wooden acting, hammy lines, a desperately over-aged cast that makes the main premise of the plot laughable and a cast of entirely dislikeable, shallow characters, means this is one film I would not recommend anyone to see.
Maybe the original, with better cast actors and made in a different era, was quite good. I don't know, I haven't seen it. But for even the most die-hard Harrison Ford fan (and believe me, I like him a lot usually), this is one to miss. How he got through the ... Read More:

I finished watching this movie horrendously confused. I was (and remain) confused by the several twists in the plot near the end; I'm simply not sure what happened in the end (I guess that was the whole point). But on a more fundamental level, I'm confused as to just what this movie was about. Relationships? Manipulation? Sex?
In all honesty, I saw very little substance in this movie. It had no strong message, nothing really to say. I am a big fan of French film -- "Ma Mere" is one of my favourites -- but I think this is an example of a movie that is basically mediocre but gets away with it simply because it is French and pretentious.

Most certainly this is good value for money to say the least. Apart from being a collection of memorable french movies with G. Depardieu this dvd is well made and the screen and sound quality are of high standards. If you like french cinema, this is a very good collection bearing in mind that Colonel chabert is not available as a single entity anywhere else. Without going into details about this or other movies, Chabert is in my opinion the best one and the scenes of the frozen planes of Russia where the Napoleonic army is annihilated is a true masterpiece of cinema having a visual and emotional impact to a viewer equal to -for example- the beach head at Omaha Beach of the ' Saving Pvt Ryan movie'. Unmissable , seems like the other movies which are also very ... Read More:

Yes it's wonderful, but spoilt to a considerable extent by the compulsory subtitles which intrude upon the visual, and distract from the aural, beauty which make it so special. It's the sort of film that can be watched several times, so even someone who didn't speak French could have enjoyed it "au naturel" after a while. Indeed I would go so far as to say that it cannot be fully appreciated in this state. Whether this extraordinary situation is due to disdain for the English consumer, or an act of sheer philistinism, is a mystery, but 1 or 2 stars have to be subtracted for desecration on this scale.

I am a big fan of historical movies but I have learned in the past never to expect too much of them. They tend to be over dramatised and sensationalised for Hollywood glamour. Thankfully this is not the case with Elizabeth.
This movie is very enjoyable and up to perhaps the final twenty minutes maintains a very engrossing plot and pace. Then it tends to drag a bit but that's no big thing. Yes there are historical inaccuracies (name me a movie now a days that is historically accurate!!!) but unlike so many other historical movies (The Other Boleyan Girl comes straight to mind and I shudder at the memory of it) the misleading facts are not as blatently obvious as they usually are. In fact unless you are quite up on the history of this time you wouldn't notice any of ... Read More:

The first time I watched this film I was slightly bored - couldn't understand what was being said or why. However, having watched it again recently I took each 'story' at face value and found myself thoroughly enjoying the beautiful camera work and actually making some sense of what the film was about and the various themes at play.
if you're not interested in watching films about the genesis of ideas, this is definitely not for you, but if you just want to sit back and watch a couple of hours of beautiful film making, I would reccomend it.

Ridicule is a French film which takes place in 1783, a few years before Louis XVI lost the ability to wear a hat; where "...in this country, vices are without consequence, but ridicule can kill." The film is about the effect of wit and word play on people's lives and careers. Malicious, mannered and highly enjoyable. Charles Berling, Jean Rochefort, Bernard Giraudeau and Fanny Ardant are excellent. A man would be a fool not to want to bed Ardant, and even more a fool to trust her.
The film is sumptuously mounted and the DVD transfer does it justice. The dialogue is so clever a knowledge of French might be in order, but the English subtitles do a superb job of conveying the witty, cruel, self-serving word play.

A labour of love; a fascinating exploration of 'what ifs'; a sobering insight into the life of one who had talent and then lost it - what is left?? Zefferilli's fiction of a mimed Carmen, using the voice of Callas from her early 60s recording, is the ultimate for Callas' many fans - but would have been fiction, a make-believe. The moral of the film is obvious: we must be satisfied with what we have, rather than seek more. Perhaps the ultimate test of genius is that we are left wanting more than we have got??
This film took a little time to get going, but then reached the level we have grown to expect from one of the greatest of our film directors. Fanny Ardant's performance was tremendous - why have we heard so little about her? And Jeremy Irons provided his usual rather ... Read More:

I second everything the first reviewer said. This film is light murder-mystery fun combined with some acid wit and engaging characters... there are even a few poignant moments thrown in. Isabelle Hupert outdoes herself in this film and Deneuve and Fanny Ardant just ooze sex and glamour and are a pleasure to watch -in all their un-nipped and tucked glory, curves and all. Great fun.
