Absolutely brilliant adaptation and a great ensemble cast. I have to single out Eileen Atkins performance as the one which affected me most - the scene where she sits struggling with her ideas of convention as to whether she can attend the funeral in support of her friend is breathtakingly good - so much of what you understand is going on is not dialogue based but entirely down to her performance.
I am absolutely addicted to this version of Jane Eyre, having watched it another 4 times this last week alone! And I'm not ashamed to admit it either! It's perfect in every way and there's nothing left out of importance. O.K. it could have done with showing more of the young Jane at Lowood Institution, but it wasn't a necessity.
This tells the story of Jane Eyre, a poor, downtrodden girl who after becoming an orphan as a baby, is sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle and their children. The Uncle passes away and Jane is left to the cruelty of her Aunt and cousins. After 10 years of bad treatment, her Aunt sends her to Lowood School and turns her back on Jane. Jane stays at Lowood for eight years when she finally manages to escape ... Read More:

Picture this: Circa 1975, A class of 32 bored, inner city school, O level English kids, dragged off to an arts cinema to see a showing of Polanski's Macbeth. We settled down for a boring couple of hours messing about and talking. Five minutes into the film, you could have heard a pin drop. We were hooked.
We went from complete disinterest, to shakespeare fans in one afternoon. I will always be grateful to that young english teacher (whatever her name was?) for igniting a lifelong interest in literature. If our Headmaster/parents had known what we were going to see, I'm sure the trip would never have happened! But the quality of acting was such, that suddenly we all knew and understood olde worlde english, something which carried on through other ... Read More:

This 1978 Granada production tells the life story of the legendery actress and beauty, Lillie Langtry. The only girl in a family of 6 brothers, Lily was a tomboy who failed to hold men in awe as was expected in the 1800's society. Marriage to the dashing Edward Langtry (Anton Rodgers) proves a disappointment as his financial situation fails to live up to his boasts. Lily (BAFTA winner Francesca Annis) has her picture sketched by a friend of her Bohemium chum Oscar Wilde (Peter Egan) - and is unexpectedly launched as a P.B. - Professional Beauty - when her glorious red hair and creamy complexion become favourites with the public who like to buy postcards of the society women of the time.
Krull is a great film from before CGI if it was made today it would be an epic on the scale of Lord of the Rings. It has a great story and a first Rate Cast who give a great performance. I know it is a bit limited in that it cobines Fantasy and Sci-fi but it was made at a time when only the Star Wars films had made top class FX and this film was shot using mainly a British cast and crew using their skills that are as good as most other film of the time. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings could not be shot at this time and Krull was as good as you got till CGI came along and so I rate this a great film but maybe if made today would be a mega hit.

Cannot believe the write up Amazon has given for this DVD box-set, this edition has nothing to do with the David Lynch theatrical version(that has the Princess providing the narration)or the Alan Smithee TV version (which has an undisclosed man narrating and the famous spitting scene) of the James Herbert classic SF novel both starring Kyle MacLachlan and Sting. It is in fact the SCIFI Channel production and a great job they do of it as well.
A much tidier production than the Lynch/Smithee films, the story and the portrayal of the characters is both enthralling and sympathetic to the spirit of the Herbert novels. Not one to sit and watch a three hour film myself I was enjoying watching Dune (2000) so much so that I let my beer get warm and my cigarettes ... Read More:

Overall: great directing, smashing play, spectacular camera work and interesting extras. The main characters demonstrated interest in the context and were `qualified' on the scene. The props and costumes looked perfect too and that is not just in my personal opinion but of a fellow historian of costumes from Moscow. Ralph Fiennes is always convincing depicting controversial villains. He looks very natural, sometimes appropriately revolting. Liv Tyler looks good too, definitely like someone you can relate your private life's worries to.
It shows a bit of Russia and a lot of emotions, it's suits Pushkin's masterpiece accordingly. Loved it.
