I don't understand the obsession with this musical and the way it's held up as The Greatest American Film Of All Time (but then, I was unimpressed by Singin' in the Rain so maybe I'm just a miserable old so-and-so).
Sure, it has superlative effects and costumes which remain iconic to this day, but the film suffers from a bloated grandiosity. Much like the new Star Wars, you can see every penny on the screen, but someone forgot to pay the writers to come up with a good story and decent tunes. It suffers from an uneven tone because of the many directors that came through the revolving door on the set trying to pull this troubled behemoth together (the movie that is, not Judy Garland).
I'd never seen this when it was on tv, but it was given as a present to me. Didn't look like my kind of thing but then I finally got round to watching it and it really tickled me. It's not just the scripts or ridiculous situations, it's the small mannerisms and quick looks which give the characters such depth. I've watched it a few times over this year and have all the other series as well. If you haven't seen it, or find the prospect of a group of priests in the back of beyond to seem dull, please give it a chance. It's worth it!!!

GET IT NOW!! On the recent comedy poll on BBC1 i was very upset to hear vicar of Dibley ahead of Father Ted, this is the undisputed KING of comedies, this is my own personal opinion though, but I'm sure it wil be yours when you own it.

It is a laugh out loud rollercoaster ride and even if you are not familiar with this hugely popular show, you will love it!!
What is not funny about the premise of 3 very bad representatives of the Catholic church being banished to isolation on Craggy Island? Father Ted Crilly, the embezzler "That money was just "resting"in my account!" Drunken Father Jack Hackett who's vocabulary consists of of 4 words "Feck, Arse, Drink, and Women!" And poor Father Dougal McGuire (the idiot boy.) He really hasn't a clue what is going on in the world and is honest to a fault. What about Mrs. Doyle? She is the long suffering housekeeper who is continually falling off the roof, has a 3 year old coldsore, and continually making tea. When given ... Read More:

Why is this not available on Region 2 format? It's such a charmer, and so rarely seen. I was hoping to get a copy for my Christmas treat, but will have to wait until I get a new player.

What a charming film with the late great Bob Peck. I knew nothing about this film, even though it was shot near where I come from in Keighley, until I read about it in MADE IN YORKSHIRE. It is also based on true events which happened in Yorkshire.
I had thought it must be dire otherwise I would have heard about. How wrong I was. Was it shown in the cinema ? I have a job tracking it down but found a copy in the Keighley lending library.
